I was looking at a newer car for the sig other and came across this advert. Is the liberty diesel an MB? Is it any good?

The information I had on them was that it was a Detroit Diesel VM model motor.

I have a 2005 Liberty CRD, and no, it is not a mercedes engine, it is the VM28.

I love the diesel libby, its a nice vehicle. Typically on ours you see 22-23 city driving(never seen below 20 even with winter fuel), and 25-27 highway, if you keep your speed 65 or lower and don't hot dog it up hills and such you can see 30 fairly often. Do date the best mileage we have gotten was 36 driving about 55.

Like any vehicle it has its quirks - for the average home wrencher they are things that are easily fixed, for example the bosch CP3 has a gear driven lift pump, meaning there is no intank lift pump. This causes air to buildup in the filter head. The solution is to install a factory lift pump from a cummins Ram, about $150 and a saturday of your time.

If your serious about it and would like some more information I would suggest checking out this forum:

I have a CRD as well, and while my mileage hasn't been as good as Sir Sam's, it's been pretty good for the size of the car. I get about 20 in the city (sometimes 18-19 in the winter, blech) and 27 highway. The only real highway trip I've done was mostly 70-80 mph, though, so I'll bet I could do better if I ever drove it on a 55-65 mph highway trip. I prefer the sedan, but for an SUV, the Libby is great ... has a nice little diesel growl at throttle and nice diesel torque.

My oldest daughter has a Liberty and just loves it. Hers is not diesel though.......
Slightly off topic for the diesel thing, but she just mentioned it this weekend and it was top of mind.

Occasionally, although not that much ... mainly because I'm still under warranty, so I never work on it myself. I lurk more than I post. I imagine once my warranty's up, that'll change.

Well, I would recommend you go ahead and do the ORM if you haven't already, mostly because if you need to go in for service you can just plug it back in.

But when your ready, we will be there, always new things on the horizon.

Somebody on the forum once said:

"It might be a Mercedes engine, but it's surrounded by Jeep".

I thought that a good point.

Nah, that CRD engine is destined for a Jeep truck.

The engine you posted isn't from a Liberty CRD. What the Liberty uses is a R 428 DOHC.

It's a VM diesel, VM being an Italian company.

Early Range Rovers used a VM diesel.

In any event, Roger Penske has at one time owned VM and Detroit Diesel, but now it appears Daimler owns VM and Chrysler owns Detroit. Now maybe GM owns it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VM_Motori

The engine I posted is very much so from a Liberty CRD, its engine code is R2516.Kx The US liberty CRD(2005-2006) Used only the R428.

The engine I posted, which I have in my garage, is the CRIP 1 version of the engine. This engine is very similar to the US 2005-2006 R428. My engine is from a 2002-2004 2.5 CRD(2.5 = MT, 2.8=AT).
