OK to drill out slide rail pins?

I'm doing a head gasket on a 86 300SDL.

For the life of me, I can't get the first slide rail pin out. I've tried all sorts of leverage with screwing bolts in and prying. No one around me sells 6mm threaded stock so I can't fab up a impact puller.

I have a close-quarters drill. Is it ok to drill out the pin?

I would not do that. Too may variables, isn't that an Aluminum head?

On the 123's the valve cover bolts are the correct thread size and the perfect length for removing that pin - just an idea.

hardware stores have metric stock - have you tried deep sockets over a bolt?

Tough to do without a slide-hammer.

If you aren't worried about the pin, put a vise-grip on it and start twisting, it'll come out slowly.

Yup, alumn head. I went to two hardware stores and HD. One had metric stock but no 6mm. I tried the bolt and socket. The bolt pulled out. This pin looks pretty banged up. I'm thinking the PO messed up the threads.

I'll try a valve cover bolt.

^^agreed, twisting works once a bolt is in there

once you get it going, its set. even if you find a bolt thats too small, you can crank up against the casting to get it started until the pin hits the bolt head.

then you need to reevaluate the design

that blows.. .I would tap it before (tap and die set) before I drill all that nasty mess into my engine etc.. and a soft alum. head.. no way.

There are a couple of bolts already in your tool-tray from the project that will fit. I belileve the ones from the injection-line clamps will work, and the ones from the tensioner assembly top.

I thought it was the thermostat housing bolts that work with washers and or nuts to space it out.

Got it! I tapped the hole and just as I got about an inch of the tap in it, the pin started spinning! Popped right out from there. Thanks everyone!
