Mercedes Wankel - many years ago

http://www.theclassictimes.com/english/magazine/ConceptCars/MercedesC111.asp

Excellent output power; must have been something they didn't like.

They also put a 617 turbo in a later version of that car.

Yea, the 1978 Nardo 617 thing

Here's the Wankel conclusion;

Dr. Kurt Obländer, head of engine testing in the C 111 project, described the Wankel engine as follows.
".............................But the main problem of the concept, its low thermodynamic degree of efficiency"

http://www.classicdriver.com/uk/magazine/3200.asp?id=12151

This link also talks about the 1978 Nardo 617

I specifically bought a Mecedes IDI because they are about THE most tolerant engine there is when it comes to alternative fuels, and that's what I wanted - to be able to use alternative fuels.

no, it was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Ital Design.. the doors were merely inspired form the 300SL....

If anything, Malcolm Bricklin somewhat copied the C111 in a pathetic attempt at a safe sports car..

one of the major problems that existed with the rotary engine was apex seal life. The earlier Mazda engine were notorious at eating seals at 50K miles. Later designs improved that margin by over 100 %. Fuel consumption was another issue, but IMO, it was a really good design, just ahead of it's time.

Rotarys still have the greatest specific output per cubic inch of any engine, and they are smoother than any V configuration engine. My car is reved to 9000 RPM all the time and if it wasen't for the shift light you would never know it. Yes, they are not economy engines but what performance engine is. They were ahead of their time, with todays ceramic seals and electronic injection and controls they are excelent motors.
Remember that a rotary Mazdas won LeMans, not Honda,Toyota, or Nissan.

This is what I was going to say.

Also they are tough to get to pass emissions, so they are suitable only for something like the mazda high performance cars like the rx7 and 8.

Agree with on 7's but Mazda dropped the ball on the RX8's they are a joke of a "performance" car. I could spank one with my wagon in stock form. They are rather pathetic, 190hp and like 130tq in the auto and the 6spd had like 180/140.
