Cracked expansion tank!

This just happened to me today...luckily I was just pulling up to my house when it happened. My brother and I heard a loud POP! and got out to find the ground covered in coolant. I'm glad this happened here, and not 200 miles from home...

Check your expansion tanks, guys! Especially since warm summer temps are coming! O_O

Yeah I replaced mind since it looked original. Throwing a new one on every 10 years or so is cheap insurance.

BTW clean that crap out before it starts rust.

My 85's tank was replaced last year when my mechanic had it to do some other stuff. He noticed that cracks were starting to form, fortunatelt it had not started to leak. I suppose I should replace the 87's tank too.

Both of our SD's have new ones.....the other two don't....but still look ok. Neither car takes very long trips from home though, the 300D is mostly for local driving (not more than 75 miles from home usually, however it has proven to be our most reliable car so far) and the other SD can't move yet.

Yea, this one looked fine, and had no noticeable cracks, plus the car only has 117k miles...I had just driven maybe two miles with the AC running. I guess it was just time for it to go.

This same thing also happened to my mom's BMW 323i a couple years back, but that was much more dramatic as it happened on the freeway, a good distance from home...anyone notice the pattern here? lol Seems like the Germans love to use plastic cooling system components...doesn't seem like the best idea to me.

Also, the California version of the tank costs around $60. I'll be picking up the one I ordered through a friend tomorrow morning, along with a new cap.

I also replaced my plastic brake fluid tank a while ago, I needed to replace the leaking seals between the tank and MC anyway and it looked pretty old/discolored. Besides, I was having trouble seeing the fluid level.

Could the Ca. version get cooked a bit faster with the Trap Cat close to it?

I have a ca. version and I don`t think the trap causes it to fail any faster.
maybe the turbo, it sits up higher because of the trap.

I changed mine about 5 yrs ago, the seam was starting to weap. bought it off e-bay for about $13.00.
Just bought one from PNP last friday for $5.84. looked good, can`t hurt to have a spare. It came off a 85 380SE, looks just the same as the one on the 300D,

On the 124 diesels, the original tanks (through 07/1992) did not have a silica pack inside, which helps control corrosion. The new tanks do have this feature. That alone is a good reason to replace the tank. Note that the level sensor often falls apart during removal, if it is 15+ years old, so don't be surprised if you also need a new sensor. Either way, the O-ring should be changed when the sensor comes out, they're generally deformed and tired after that many years.

Your new one has an extra hose barb at the top? an overflow hose? or is the old one there but out of sight on the back side?

I must admit to being shocked at my first sight of a Mercedes expansion tank -- I've seen a lot of plastic overflow tanks and have installed a few on older cars, but this one (in my '85, first M-B I'd owned) had a pressure cap on it! A plastic tank under pressure? Obviously it works, but I'm still surprised that more of them don't burst on a daily basis. Perhaps it is a function of my age group that I grew up believing good stuff was made of metal and cheap stuff was made of plastic (and said "Made in Japan").
