Trans shifting problem, 1980 300D

It seems like my transmission is shifting firm, but at really high shift points. I unplugged the kickdown switch and no change. Playing with the vacuum I could make it shift harder or softer, but the shift points are the same.

1-2 about 20MPH, 2-3 about 40MPH, 3-4 closer to 60 MPH. I don't have a Bowden cable, so I'm thinking that the kickdown solenoid might be stuck since this just started happening recently and it was working fine before this. Anyone know where the kickdown solenoid is located and does this sound right?

This car has 87,031 miles on it and all my other have a dowden cable.

Anybody have a similar issue with an older Benz like mine? It just followed me home!

Doesn't your car have a bellcrank- a rod that goes from the top of the valve cover down to the passenger side of the transmission ? If so, there is an adjuster on top near the valve cover pivot that should be lengthened or shortened to move the shift points.

I don't know

I don't know, but on my 1991 300d, it was shifting funny at times, took it to a MB mechanic, and they found the gas pedal cable was sort of sticking. They had to replace the rubber (?) sheathing or something, and they lubed the metal ball looking sort of joint on the engine, the linkage that the gas pedal moves. It really helped, the car became a lot quicker, too.

I'll have to look into that! I've never had one of these before of this model year and the first thing I tried, unplugging the kickdown swith underneath the gas pedal didn't change anything.
