Transmission Vacuum Modulator Removal

My '77 300D with a '79 300SD engine has shifted very harshly ever since the engine transplant. I checked the vacuum to the transmission and everything checked out good so I decided to adjust the vacuum modulator on the transmission. Well when I tried to take the cap off, half of the whole unit snapped off with it! So my question is how do you remove it? I could not for the life of me get a wrench on the nut on the back of the modulator. Has anybody had a similar problem and what size wrench fits on the nut?
