Bluetec Idle noise?

I test drove an '07 E320 Bluetec yesterday a doctor friend who is moving over seas (Egypt:eek:) is selling. At idle, the car sounds funny, like a sewing machine that makes a little ping irregularly popping up now and again. Although quieter than my idling E300, it doesn't sound as smooth.

I have never driven another bluetec, and didn't have the luxury of asking a salesman about the sound or if I could listen to another one--the MD didn't know anything about it and I didn't want to insult him so I didn't ask.

Anybody have one? Is this the way they sound? In the cabin and underway you hear nothing, btw, and the thing doesn't feel much faster than my chipped E300, but there is no discernible lag. The thing is mint and has 11K on it--blue with tan leather and a wood-trimmed steering wheel. Very good price.

Thanks.

At idle they do sound a little strange.....probably due to the immense injection pressures (23,000+ psi) The only reason the fuel does not explode in the lines is because there is no oxygen! :dizzy2: Although I suppose the same is true even for our low pressure injection systems on our old engines.....

I don't think the bluetec has all that much more HP than a chipped 606 engine.....but it does have more torque.

Thank you.

My '05 CDI has just a little over 200HP, but it does have 370 lb/ft of torque!!!!!

Mine idles with a slight tick to it, reputable mechanic in AZ said it was normal, and physically the idle is perfectly smooth.

Yeah they are not the smoothest sounding things at idle, but for a diesel they are pretty damn quite!

Now that I read about it, think of it as a Bluetick, instead of a Bluetec ...

You could undoubtedly find another CDI MB or Jeep that you could listen to for comparission.

Where I live, I'd probably get me a@@ kicked for saying that by someone thinking I was insulting one of man's best friends:D:D

I don't need a car for about three more months, but I may make an offer on this thing tomorrow, as I haven't seen one for sale for anything than more than kbb.

I was thinking of going to a dealer tomorrow and listening to a new bluetec.

I don't think an irregular ping is normal on any diesel. I'd listen to another Bluetec. I've only heard a Bluetec idling on a YouTube video but I didn't hear anything like that. Ditto for a CDI that I listened to in person.

The noise is not normal. I took the car to the dealer on Saturday (where it was purchased). It checks out fine and they were all familiar with it and the guys other cars. I listened to another bluetec and it did not sound like this one. One of the techs claimed he couldn't hear a difference in the noise this one makes and the new ones:rolleyes: Two others heard it but offered no explanation. Since I have had it for two days, I'm going to take it back and think about it some more:D
