Diagnosing P0215 malfunction???
 

This is my first post on the forum and a newbie to the benz world. I picked up an 98' e300 a few months ago and it was working fine. A heat wave just hit the Bay Area and when I go to turn off my car I got a short rev surge then a CEL came up - an error code P0215. Don't quite know where to start looking? Any help is much appreciated.

If so that is a generic code for an electrical fault with the electric shut-off actuator on the injection pump. MB part number for the part is 000-078-44-49.

My past expirience with PO215 and shutdown "surge" was the result of a very small fuel leak at the oring behind the shutoff valve (SOV). Is also possible the valve itself is failing.

The SOV is the black plastic valve on the side of the IP.

The oring is avail at the dealer. Removal requires a torx bit; by removing the windsheild washer bottle you can gain sufficient access from above to remove it w/o having to pull the IM.

ps: Are you running SVO/WVO??? If so, and if also a single tank unheated system, the thicker viscosity of that oil may be causing the SOV to close more slowly than it might otherwise setting that code.

Yes the car is a 1998 e300 turbo diesel.

Yes I am running the car on veggie oil using a 2 tank Greasecar system.

Strange though that this would happen on such a hot day, you would think that the veggie oil was nice and thin, could just be like you said that the SOV is going bad. I will do as suggested: 1. check/replace the oring behind the SOV. 2. Change out the SOV if that doesn't do it. 3. Replace the k40 relay. Any good places to get parts for this car. I am in San Francisco, but I guess the internet may be cheaper.

Use a mirror and flashlight and look up under the SOV for any leaks. One or two other members using veg have had the same happen; maybe is a chunk of fat going through???:( For some it has not reoccured. That code will clear itself if doesnt occur again within 3 cold/hot/cold run cycles (usually 1.5-2 days for a daily driver).

Thanks, for all the info. I'll drive it around for a couple of days and see if the code clears. I went down to the dealer and they had to special order the orings, I also ordered a couple of torx screws just in case I mess them up. $5 not bad if it does the fix, the SOV is $150. IDo you have the part number for the k40 relay, the Mercedes guy didn't seem to know what I was talking about.

It seems that you're right in that the CEL went out a couple of days later. My orings arrive tomorrow. Should I go ahead and change it or leave it alone and what till something else happens?

I'd replace it, MBDOC has posted previously that a bad SOV can short the IFI computer. If after the new oring is installed the code comes back you could surmise the valve itself is failing.
