smoking under the hood...in the bad way

Hey Gang,

I have a 240D with about 225k miles on it. I've had the radiator completely replaced (after failing) and now there's a piece just behind the radiator at the bottom of the vehicle that started smoking a bit this morning. Smelled awful, too. My buddy tells me he thinks it might be the air conditioner. The AC is busted anyway so can I just snip the belt attached to the smoking apparatus?

Also...I'm very green when it comes to cars but I'm tired of not being able to figure things out on my own. Is there a website that clearly labels the stuff under the hood (diagrams or just labeled photos) that a n00b like me can use to start getting familiar with this stuff?

Here's some pics of the piece that was smoking:

Thanks,
-Ian

If it is a belt rubbing on the non-functional AC compressor you can cut it off no problem. The clutch on it must have finally burned out. On my 300d it is located on the driver's side, way down low. I'm not sure if its the same on the 240.

You're not the only newb.

eeesh - those are the oil cooler lines!!!!

Sometimes the motor mounts get tired and allow the engine to rub those lines.
If a hole is rubbed in the line, oil will go everywhere - if you are driving and don't stop immediately when this happens, you will be replacing the engine!

If the smoke is really coming from below those lines then you are ok, but make sure that those two hoses you have circled are in good condition, and if not - replace them yesterday!

Sorry for not being clearer, but the hoses appear to be fine. It's the thing right below them that has smoke coming out of it. The smoke smells odd, like chemically sweet. Almost like blue cheese?

Thanks for posting pictures.

Looks like your buddy is right. Cut that belt off and your problem should be solved. Nasty smell is familiar as well.

Looks like your AC siezed.

As for learning, check the DIY tab above, hang out here and observe and ask questions when you have problems. Not everyone grew up wrenching, but you can learn.

Awesome! Thanks everyone, that seemed to be the correct fix: snipping the belt that connected the engine's crank shaft to the AC unit. Not an easy belt to cut with some cheapy scissors I found here at work, but eventually sawed through it. Cheapest repair ever! I have no intentions of fixing the AC (lucky to live in San Diego) so I'll leave it like this without the belt.

Thanks!

well you are lucky to live by the coast. Living inland the temps the last few days have been like 98 or so. These past 2 days have been real nice though at around 78. Its supposed to heat back up over the weekend so that kinda sucks. I will be down in san deigo on monday for business so that will be a relief from the heat.

You might see your fuel economy go up a bit as well.
