How to repair the cassette player?

The radios in these cars are crap to begin with, but I need the cassette player to play my ipod through the cassette adapter.

What's happening now, though it used to work just fine, is that the cassette player is clicking from forward to backward, continuously when the cassette adapter is in. Anyone know how to fix that?

Thanks,

Jeff 1991 300d

I would just get a new radio with an AUX jack and connect the iPod to that. New radios with that function can be found for pretty low prices, including Blaupunkts if you know where to look.

You will have NO luck finding a radio that will be "plug n play" in your 300D. Those are the most asinine setups I have ever seen. The head unit in the back is nothing but a controller. The tuner is in the trunk, amp is in the trunk, fader is routed from the trunk to the center console back to the speakers. I just sold an Audio 10 I bought just because it was such a PITA to try to get it to work right in there.

You should probably just buy a new head unit to replace that one. That would be a pretty cheap fix, and it will be plug n play.

I suppose it depends on your point of view. Granted that the factory Becker Grand Prix lacks the bass over-boost that children are raised with these days, it's still pretty good if it's maintained properly (like a Benz). You can get the tape player repaired for about $50 or replace the radio with a modern one. Wiring is not difficult, in spite of the whining, and the pinout is available on this forum.

Also, I can't find the website right now, but you can have Becker add an input jack to your radio for a small fee.

I really like the original Becker in my 85. The tuner part is awesome. I've never used the cassette player though.

If you do go with that option, PLEASE open it up and post what they did. I've searched everywhere, but can never find the schematics. I've been using a 108MHz FM transmitter that gives much better sound than the 88MHz ones.

There's a similar aux input mod available if you have a Silverstone CD changer. You don't have to send it to a shop. You just have to tap into the wires feeding sound from the changer the head unit. Similar to the cassette mod, you have to play a CD to get aux input sound.

I just had another thought. Maybe your cassette player is fine and it's your adapter that has the problem. Both of the little hubs in the adapter need to turn freely, or the player will think it's at the end of the tape and that it needs to change sides.

Something along this line is what I also thought was a possibility. If your casette player thinks the tape is not transporting it will click to the reverse feed.

I thought it was the cassette player, so I threw it away, got another one, and it did the same thing. So I'm guessing it's the cassette player, not the tape, which used to work.

I would hardly call stating a fact "whining". That wasn't very nice at all.

Remove old head unit, place in trash, purchase new headunit so you can just plug your Ipod in and install.

If you actualy care how it sounds get an amp, and new speakers while your at it. Than rewire the whole thing, and it should pass for decent.

MB didn't install a factory sound system worth keeping until Bose.
