I really want this Turbodiesel 5-Speed Wagon!

I REALLY want this wagon! I will probably be shunned from now on for admitting this fact. Yes, it's a french car from the 1980's. But, a 80-90 HP turbodiesel engine and a 5-speed yield decent mileage. If I was in the market for a 1980's french car, would this one be a good choice? I've seen a diesel Peugeot wagon puttering around town before amazingly. I like wagons, 5-speeds, and diesels... What about the reliability (haha) of the 505's, is the diesel engine solid (as a souffle)?

"1985 Peugeot 505 Turbodiesel stationwagon. Converted to run on biodiesel. 2.3 liter turbodiesel 4 cylinder engine, 5 speed manual transmission, ice cold air conditioning, 83,xxx orig miles, driven here from California last year: no rust anywhere. Car gets 35 mpg.
$2,500"

That wagon is perfectly beautiful. If I could come across a 280TE in wonderful shape and semi-low miles, I'd sell my 64k-mile 300D for it.

The Pugs enjoy a strong reputation in other parts of the world and I bought one about 13 years ago, a gasser wagon, for my son to drive. It was a disaster compared to a benz. Parts availability was nil. The pug is not nearly the quality of a benz but it drove and rode and handled very well. I sold it after a few months of ownership and was glad to not lose too much on it.

I've heard in the past that Peugeots shared the same engine that is manufactured for Renaults and Volvos. I'm not certain if thats all models or only certain gas engines. But if you do buy it that would make it a little easier to get parts knowing you have 3 alternatives.

Is the turbodiesel in it a PRV engine like the engine in the DeLorean?
But... Parts Availability... . There's a guy down the street with two 80's (daily drivers!) Alfa Romeos he's had since new. So there's someway he kept those running and obtained parts, there could be some hope with a french car! (not likely!)

There's also a Saab Sonnett III that caught my eye too. Help, I like un-reliable Euro cars!

"This car has been in storage at Lake of the Ozarks since 1985. In the last 3 years it has had some restoring to make it a daily driver. It has original 92,603 miles on it, original interior and still has some work to be done on it, but it is driveable now. Please contact Jim at 573-480-2978 if interested."

It has a fiberglass body and a V4 (yes, not inline) Ford Taunus engine.

Do not be afraid! That Peugeot diesel has better performance numbers than most Mercedes (that should get some comments). Peugeot no longer imports vehicles to North America, but they exist as the oldest continuous name in the automobile world. They had a little problem using bolts that were too short to hold the cylinder head in place, but it was not a major problem and was partially corrected by Peugeot. You will also get seats that are second to none. Why do I know all these things? Because I have worked on 504, 505, and 604 and presently own a 505 Liberte gas version for which I have a diesel engine to install if I ever get around to it. I am sure the 505 would do the same, but the 504 gave better fuel mileage (37) at eighty mph than at 65 mph (34). Go for it!

That was the V6 shared by Peugeot, Volvo, Saab, American Eagle and possibly a few others. CJ

Well, I have a few options for my MB. I'm going to college soon and I'm taking a car with me.

1. Take the MB... Watch it slowly oxidize and rust away in the school parking lot, not driven much or too little time for maint. Expensive to insure, drive, and maintain for the year I've had it. I don't want to have it turn to crap and lose value by lack of care. I might be able to break even if I sold it this summer. I would use the car for puttering around town and highway trips.
2. Buy a fun Euro car (Sonnet, Peugeot turbo-diesel, etc) that I would enjoy the few times I drive it per week and driving home for weekends. And less expensive, so I wouldn't care how much as it rots.
3. Go Uber-Cheap and get a beater Crown Vic, use the car as an appliance. Run the car into the ground!

Storing the MB during college is probably not an option with my parents. It would be an option that would take up their garage space and annoy them.
I like the MB, but the costs for it add up and I won't have the time or money to deal with it during college. It might be best to sell my car and get something I wouldn't be concerned about sitting in the parking lot.

Another factor in keeping a nice, quirky diesel MB in college:
-They are chick's magnets if properly maintained.

That Peugeot is nice, my uncle had several of'em.

If you really want a durable car, look at what poor Africans drive. Check out any video footage of African street scenes and you'll notice 80's Peugeots and Japanese pickups everywhere. Some Benzes. All diesel, of course.
