Pick your motor oil carefully

Pulling out on I-10 out of Kerrville Texas and was heading back to Houston in my 88 190d ,made it 40 miles of up and down grades in the hill country when I noticed my oil pressure wasnt pegged.Pulled of the interstate to a service station and opened the hood ,the tappets were not sounding good ,really bad feeling when your so far from home.I looked at the oil stick and it was up to snuff just running off the stick like hot butter.I remembered I had purchased my not regular rotella purchase since they were out and went with this motorcraft diesel brand ,bad choice. After I found a Shell station I was able to change the oil out and make my way back home with no issues. Thanks Shell for saving my motor and about a $400 tow.

That is very good advice and one of the biggest reasons I recommend this, especially in the heat!

They also make this for Synthetics too.

http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=49&catid=2&loc=show

These can easily be found at most auto parts stores including Napa!
I reduced my operating temps 10*C and increased my Idle 50 to 60 RPM.

Thumbs up Rotella......

You might want to try Rotella Synthetic.......I noticed improved fuel consumption and perhaps a bit cooler running temperatures.......

As a Diesel Engineer I have never run anything but Rotella in a non-crosshead type engine......

I allways ran delvac, but rotella is also a very renound name. I also add a splash of ATF fluid into each oil change, helps keep everything clean.

other than it being a tad thick in the winter, nope.
most on this board think 5W40 is the cat's meow for winter use.

I've been using the 15W40 Delo LE in my MB myself, and Delo 40WT in my F250 (it has a bit of a blowby problem)

I've noticed a lot of people here use the Rotella. I never thought there was that big a difference between one brand of oil and another. What's so good about Rotella?

. . . . ziiiip! (Sound of flame retardant suit being zipped up as I await your responses . . . . )

I've always just used rotella 15-40 in my diesel, and my father's diesels. Its good oil and we've never had any problems using it. I don't even switch to a lighter weight during the winter. of course, i do live in louisiana!

I know. I've probably started something now. Well, it's been at least a month or two since we had one, hasn't it?

Rotella is not a motor oil ,its a lubricant from the motor gods.I didnt tell the part about spilling 4 quarts of oil at their station ,it was a major embarrasment walking up to the gal and telling her that my oil change went very bad.She was not upset ,just gave me a reciept for my purchase and commented ," at least it wasnt gas like the guy yesterday",then said that the night crew would clean it up.Hot oil out of a burning hot motor feels about like fryer oil ,Im not imagining what that feels like anymore ,no burns luckily.I made comment that I would take care of the kitty litter drop ,then anyone on that side of the station woudnt increase the mess by driving over it ,she agreed .
Those tappets were really not getting the oil they like and after the oil change it was all sounding factory .My trip the rest of the 300 miles went very smooth otherwize ,thanks to that ROTELLA .
