Power Steering Pump missing Bolts and I may have broken the tensioner

Well I was cleaning my radiator out when I noticed my Power steering Pump Flopping in the wind.

It looks to be missing Bolts. It currently only has one bolt holding it. The other was the one used as a tensioner I believe. I didn't know this and tightned it all the way down. I drove it around for a little since I thought it would work but now I see a Metal type of insert that applys pressure to the pump.

I'm not sure if I broke the tensioner? What is it called?

I also need bolts to secure the PS pump. I need some help.

Between where it mounts the tensioner has a metal insert it seems that pivots inside of the mount on the PS Pump is it broke?

I remember there being three bolts holding on the PS pump. I don't remember any tensioner. The curved slot in one of your pictures is where one goes. On the last picture, the 'ears' of the PS pump gets a bolt. I think it comes in from the back side. If you look up and to the left, the hole there is where the bolt comes from, goes through. Look around the bottom of the PS pump for the third bolt.
The one on the top left is the pivot point. The other should be curved slots. You pull up and to the right (if faceing the front of the pump) to get tension on the Pump. Actually, I remember a bolt coming from the top with a large 'eyelet' ending on it. This sets the tension on the belt.

I believe also that you should have three bolts plus that tensioner on top, holding it on. If I were you I would look for another car like yours and see what you need (wrecking yard, friend). I remember they are all 13mm heads on my pumps.

Send me your e-mail address through a private message. I have a PDF of the belt tensioning. It might help. Has drawings of the three bolts and the tensioner bolt.

PM sent

You guys are a great help!!!!!

So what is that thing on the right side that looks like it slides into the back of the PS pump?? It's in the first 2 pictures but the 3rd picture down shows it best.

The 2 bolts that I do have is the one on the bottom left side if you were to look at it from the front of the car. It is on a pivot/slide the other is the tensioner bolt.

You guys are awesome!!! Without this site I really don't know who would be this knowledgeable.

Are there any other sources for the parts I need? There is 1 car about 2 hours away that might have the piece.

Does anyone have another source?

You'd probably have to call phil or go to a dealer to get the exact bolt, otherwise you could find as close of one as you can at a hardware store or something.

There should be three bolts + the little tensioner bolt. keep the bolts loose, adjust the tensioner to the right tension (snug belt but not super tight) then tighten the three bolts down and it should be all set.

Ok from the picture it looks like I have the adjuster bolt. If you guys can check what is the part,if it is a part that the adjuster bolt goes into?

Ok so I have 14 and 12.

You can see from my last picture posted that 11 has a space in between and is a very long bolt. Is there a sleeve that goes in between?

Eric,
I sent the PDF. Hope it helps. I remember there being a plastic round piece that fits into the back of the PS Pump. The tension adjuster bolt attaches to it. I bought my bolts and nuts from a local True Value store. They also carry the wave washers, sort of a lock ring. NAPA carries them too. I think the NAPA ones are of higher quality, Doorman. I don't remember the sizes I used. I looked at the bolts this morning, they looked like 10mm or 12mm. For some reason 127mm length sticks in my mind. Still, I'd meassure the width of the piece it attaches to and the width of the ears on the PS pump.

That PDF shows just about everything THANKS!!

That plastic piece is the one I think I will have an issue with. I wish people carried parts like that online.

The only bolt that I see an issue with is the one that goes thru the P/S ear. There must be a metal tube? or something between both ears so the ear that faces out doesn't break.

In this picture on the leftside you can see the outer most ear but there is no bolt thru it? Does it just go thru the one closest to the block?

Eric,
That E-Bay link picture has the same problem as yours. No bolts. There should be two 'ears' on the left side of your PS Pump. The PS pump's back will be placed against the big block of aluminum bracket. There will be three holes in the big block of aluminum bracket. One hole will be a regular hole. It is shown in one of your pictures in the upper left. A bolt will come from the backside and a nut will be screwed onto the bolt and be 'placed' or located over the ear. Or poke bolt from the back side of the big aluminum bracket and through the hole of the PS pumps upper left ear. Place nut onto the bolt.
The plastic part and its bolt needs to be in place before that. The other two bolts need to come from the backside too. They will go through, one each, through each curved slot on the big aluminum bracket. and through the PS pumps corrisponding ears. Place nut on bolts.
Tom

Eric, look at only page 15 of the PDF, its the last page. It shown the blot and nut locations and the tensioner bolt location. It doesn't shown the plastic piece.

Ok, so I figured I could go to the only Junkyard that I know of in a proximity of 2 hours that has a 83 300D. I bought a door and some misc of stuff last month. So I figured I would give them a call. They said the car still had the P/S Pump.

I got there and said I needed some bolts to the P/S pump. I guess I should have known that they weren't going to sell just the bolts to me. $100.00 Later and another 30 minutes. I left with a P/S pump, and 4 Bolts. 3 used to mount it and 1 that has the Plastic wedge that provides tension. I guess this will go to my currently growing inventory of parts I don't need ATM

I would have worked on it as soon as I got home but I would'nt have had enough time to finish. So I guess when I adjust the belt tension I will just use my judgement. But really what should the proper tension feel like?

I usually set the tension so I can deflect it about 1/4 inch with my thumb, tight enough not to slip when it gets wet and loose enough not to abuse the bearing.

Keep in mind, the tighter the belt the more stress on the bearings. I keep my belts on the "looser' side.
