35 mpg seems to stretch the truth, but what kind of mileage could one expect on highway driving, let's say at 45mph?

If one drove at 45 mph on a smooth surface in an S-Class diesel, I bet 40 miles per US gallon would not be out of the question. A W126 300SE achieves close to 30 mpg at a sustained speed of 56 mph according to Mercedes' figures. From that same consumption chart, the SE gets only 21 - 22 mpg at 75 mph, which is accurate.

It's amazing what speed and conditions will do for your MPG.
Last week and the week before I took a 10-day vacation, in which I drove up to Seattle, WA (from Reno, NV). Because my alternator will still out in the Benz I took a 1997 Toyota Corolla. This car typically gets 28-32 MPG in town. As an experiment (a long, semi-boring, but then relaxing and rewarding experiment) I decided I would drive no faster than about 57-58 mph the whole way (with the exception being downhill stretches where I didn't have to use the gas at all). I would stop and add gas to full level about every 175 miles. The best MPG achieved on the trip was 56, on about a 300 mile stretch through Eastern Oregon. The average MPG ended up being about 50. Frankly I was shocked to see these numbers (with my usual around-town-going-70mph mpg being about 30). But I think it does show that great MPG can be achieved if we are willing to just SLOW DOWN (and if we're driving on a no-stop-lights freeway )

That's a big difference and an interesting experiment. I wonder what I'd get in my Jetta. I know when I dropped my typical freeway speed from 75 to 70 mph my mileage went from 42 to 46 mpg (combined with city driving). I know 50-60 mph is the most efficient speed but I didn't know it makes that much of a difference.

Problem with 55-60MPH in CA on the freeways is that some SOB will ride your bumper flashing his lights and blaring his horn......when the passing lane is empty. I usually just slow down when this happens and figure I'll get shot the bird as the SOB finally decides he isn't going to make me go faster, and goes around. Driving the diesel is a bit different than driving the 560SEC. But it might make me a better driver of the SEC too.
Looking for a long trip in Freesil to check the mileage. PO says 400 plus miles a tank is very doable. Right now 400 miles to a tank is fabulous. 24 in town over 13 (560SEC) or 19(380SE) is very acceptable to me.

Around here you would die if you went much below 60. But if you drove 45 most likely a BMW in your trunk.

I love that stretch of the 101 between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara (and even through Goleta and beyond) where 95% of drivers fall in line and drive 55-65 mph. I almost always see CHP sedans on that stretch, love it actually.

This is funny. My brother says he set the cruise at 56 and goes all day in PA. I say set the cruise at 56 and get killed in 5 minutes out here!! I set the cruise at 80 and go. Maybe I'll try it at 70 for awhile but I don't want to be a speed bump!!
