w124 300d experts please help......
After making a two hr commute, i noticed that after taking the exit ramp that my temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, and fuel gauge and tach not working. I thought the car stalled but that was not the case. The weird thing is that the speedo and the clock still working. The car starts and runs fine but there is a faint whine noise that persists even after the door is closed as you can hear a faint buzzing sound.
Could this be as easy as a fuse blown? Any ideas?????:confused::confused: |
The speedo is mechanical and the clock runs directly from the battery so most failures will not affect them. First, check the over-voltage protection relay and its built-in fuse, in the little compartment behind the battery. Then check all of the fuses in the main fuse compartment, on the left side near the firewall..

If you have this type of fuses in your car check closely;they can look good at first glance.

Diesel911 makes a good point about the fuses. Most people here feel that fuses with copper/brass elements are superior to aluminum but in any case, the fuse must have clean, non-corroded ends to work properly. Sometimes the contacts in the fusebox also corrode. In an emergency (no spares?) you can gently sand the ends of the fuses but the best way is replacement with new fuses.
A voltmeter does not always give non-ambiguous results. The fuse may be corroded or partially broken so that only a small area makes contact, enough to look good to a voltmeter but not enough to pass the amount of current needed by a power window, a blower, or a large light bulb. Although your favorite dealer charges an arm and a leg for fuses, they are only a few cents apiece if you get them from online suppliers such as FastLane (click the "Buy Parts" link at the top of this page). If your fuses are old, it wouldn't hurt to replace all of them with brand-new ones. Jeremy |
When I go to the junk yard I bring some Zip Lock bags with me and stock up on fuses and light bulbs and ect. The charge very little for those " Miscellaneous Items" when it comes to pay.
