Please Wish My Reman R4 a Happy 2nd Birthday!

Hi everyone,

Today marks the 2nd anniversary of the in-service date of my remanufactured R4 compressor.

Still working great, 39F at the vents at 97F ambient. The only adjustments or maintenance that I've done has been to tweak the belt tension a couple of times.

I grow more convinced that R4 compressors, either rebuilt or new, are perfectly acceptable for genuine R-12 applications, and are only suspect for R-134A due to the high pressures.

happy birthday!
keep that condenser clean. keep 134 AWAY from it, and you will be cooling for years to come!
I hope you have properly beat into submission any wood nearby as you offered this thread up to the gremlins in charge of murphy's law...

Still working well, although I had sort of a scare a couple of months ago...

My reman R4 using R12 lasted more than 2 but less than 3 years. The previous reman R4 lasted a little more than 1 year.

The original lasted more than 20 years.

This one locked up and I'm taking the gamble out and plan to replace with a new one rather than rebuilt to save my limited supply of R12 for more years to come.

Well, I'm using my "spare time" to read old threads so far I've gone back to page 233 and counting . . . I learn all kinds of cool things!:D I only spend a few hrs a day . . . I like to read . . . I don't have a TV! This is more fun too!:)

How many pages do they have ? I thought threads dropped into the ' archive search only ' way before that many pages...

My reman R4 has been kicking a** with 134a. After all the money I spent to get the system going, R12 is waaay to expensive for me. The R4 has a 2 year warranty from advanced auto so if it dies ill just get another, Just make sure I don't let it clunk me in the head when installing lol. I know R12 would cool off the car faster but I am happy so far as long as its working. If it gives me any real trouble I will break down and buy some R12.

Shame on you, how long have you been around?:P

OK, I'm just picking on you . . . the bottom of the "Diesel Discussion" page tells us who is on line, and we can navigate to other pages . . . each page has 40 threads . . . but the stickies stay at the top of each page (wish they were only on the first one . . .) looked like this, a few min ago . . . Shows 1602, looks like I have a bunch of reading to do!:D

The R4's have gotten a reputation for being poor rebuild candidates, but I believe that this depends on the rebuilder. I remember reading some time ago that the guts are available as an assembly, so it's a matter of proper techniques. I don't what this entails, but I do believe that there are indeed some outfits that can do a good job of rebuliding them.

Unfortunately I have never used one from a competent rebuilder. I've replaced a few with rebuilts and never had good luck.
