What would you do with this?

...and let's say, another 10 grand to find something to drop it in and other parts. I'm thinking dropped in an old Chris Craft Cruiser would be fun.

Fantasy time!

Same displacement and similar basic output to a 5.9 Cummins, but harder to get parts for, I'd skip it.

Well since their is only one that is a bit of a problem for putting it in a lot of boats. More so since parts are probably hard to get. I'd prefer a nice set of Cummins B series, with some ZF gears.

Or a 3126, those are good engines:

The newer electronic diesels are better because they don't smoke as much, spool up faster, burn less fuel, and are quiter.

Edit: since this is a MB website, get MTU's!

Not a bad idea. They made diesel Scouts for a brief bit in the late 70's and early 80's, but they went with a little Japanese diesel that was just too small for the application. Something this size might be a touch of overkill, but I could live with that.

Depends on the Chris Craft, they made hundreds of different models. From 8-72 feet.

The 315 is fast with the 454's, but sucks fuel at an alarming rate, more so these days. Its to heavy for small blocks, but with a pair of Cummins B's its oh so sweet. Its like a Bertram 31 at 1/4 the price.

If you know which Chris Craft's to buy you can score some amazing deals, because they are built just as good as a similer vintage Bert, or Hatt, they just didn't have a big name.

hey hattie,
I have a bayliner 20' with a blown (as in dead, not supercharged...) small block.
W.W.Y.D.? put in another small block (I gots lots of em...) put in the 4.3 v6 for lower performance, but better fuel economy...(I gots lots of these too...) or put in an MB diesel and have steller economy, but even lower performance?
I am not sure what I want to do... and you have loads more boating experience than most.

I would replace it with whatever was in their, unless you got a screaming deal on a V6. What year Bayliner? Is it a Volvo or Merc? Merc short blocks can be gotten cheap rebuilt, we got ours out of Long Island. Doug Russel Marine(think thats the name) always has them cheap. Volvo is a PITA.

That hull wouldn't be able to get on plane with one of our diesels.

volvo prop, so my guess is volvo looks really tight in there.
I figure I can swap over the intake/wp onto any small block... or build something else for the swap to a v6. I have about 10 engines on stands in the shop now, so my options are pretty open.

I friend of mine has a Carver 440 but I can't remember if he has twin Caterpillars or twin Volvo diesels.

Either way its an AWSOME boat. A heck of a lot better then the "never want to start" Chevy V8's in the Silverton that I used to pilot.

Its probably a Volvo 270 or 280 drive. What year mid 80's?

Well considering the cost (free) just swap what you have to over and cross your fingers. But marine engines are really different, you might be able to get away with a car long block since the boat is light. You want to use as much of the currant engine in that boat as possible, check the cam it might be different.

Is this a lake boat? If so you might be able to get away without changing the manifolds and risers, if its used in salt plan on them.
