300d Euro bumper.. early vs. late

I got some Euro bumpers out of storage The 1980 bumper weighed 2x as much as the 1984 version...

TOP - the old version has a beefy 10mm thick piece of steel that runs the full length and curls around to the bumper tips, and it has a largish piece of square stock running between the mounts, welded to the flat stock for rigidity, it must weigh 50-60lbs

the 1984 version is thin channel stock w/ no internal bumper tip protection, it might weigh 30 lbs.

Hope you find this as mildly interesting as I did.

My "85" Euro, 240Ds bumper has 1&1/4 +- round stock inside about like schedule 80 pipe. They might have used anything they happen too have lying around to put in back of those bumpers My 79s euro rear bumper "backing"is totally different.

2 different techniques to make the stock euro bumper meet US DOT regulations when the car was imported. I've had 3 euros, each different (that that as well). Yours do look a lot heavier than what I've got.

now I gotta go look at my 85 td's bumper... thanks!
hmmmm, I wonder if I should pull the bumper off, and remove any steel found in there for weight and fuel efficiency? I think that the vehicle is safe enough without the bumper ballast... pretty scr$w$d in an accident anyway as far as the bumpers are concerned...

I'm almost inclined to say the same....

The euro rear bumper I got from a 300D used a 1.5" square tube with brackets welded to it and bolt holes cut with a torch. It was about 5lbs from being heavier than the US bumper.
