Oil Pump Chain
Mine is broken and I would like to know if there is an easy way out. It looks like I have to raise or pull the engine. Is there a easier way? The engine manual says not to use a master link! 82 300D

I' d see if there is available a "Solid" chain with no breaks (The Oil Pump Chains used to come that way) New gear (For the New Chain) on the oil pump Inspect your drive gear for the oil pump chain on the driveshaft for wear. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE PROPER LOCTITE ON THE OIL PUMP GEAR BOLT. I would remove the Driven Gear (on the Oil Pump) to replace the chain. (You will not want to do it this way...BUT if I can't find a solid chain... I'm going to assemble the chain (PEEN) on the bench and then install. I know I'll have to have access to the crankshaft drive gear[that's the least of my worries])

Take the old chain to a motorcycle machinist. Maybe he can determine the failure mode.
