Trunk Lock

Does anyone have any tips on picking the trunk lock on an 85 300D? The key associated with the VIN doesn't work and Hoehn wants $130 for a new set. Heard it could be cheaper to get it open then have a key made for it..thanks

Drill it and replace. Get a different one from a j/y and repin to match your key. I did a write up in the tech section on this. Or, go to a locksmith and pay about $40 for a working key.

Use vacuum

Can you not unlock the trunk with vacuum applied to the line going back there?

my car's PO did the drill method, but didn't install a replacement. He also tried a crowbar.

Just find the vacuum line that goes to the trunk and use that to pop the mechanism, well worth saving the cyl.

keys

When my 240d's tumbler took a dive, i took it to a locksmith. He was able to form a key just by putting it in the tumbler and fileling it by hand based on the marks that the tumbler made on the blank. It only took him about 10 minutes and about 20 bucks. I am sure this is true with the trunk, on one condition. I don't believe that locksmiths have the blanks for the doublesided keys that are on the SDs. They probably only have access to the blanks for the 123s and 116s.

If the vacuum trick doesn't work you can access the trunk lock mechanism from the inside of the car. If you pull out the first aid kit you can use a stick with a hook on the end to unlock the mechanism and open the trunk. It's a little tricky but it can be done. Once the trunk is open you can pull the lock cylinder out. With the cylinder out of the lock mechanism put the key into the cylinder and grind down the tabs that stick out. Now the key will work in that cylinder.
