Ticking front of engine

Hey guys,

I am new here but have been lurking for a while now. I have a 84 300dt with a ticking problem. I adjusted the valves which did not cure the problem.

The ticking only seems to arise when the car has reached operating temperature and is changes with engine speed. Sounds to be coming from the front of the engine or in the belt area.

At first I thought timing chain, which i should have checked when doing the valves, but did not. Now I am thinking maybe vacuum because I recently lost door locks and it doesn't always shut of now. Maybe 1 out of 4 don't shut off.

Is it possible for the vacuum pump to make a ticking noise that is only present when the car is warm? Or is it something else.

Thanks

change the vac pump- it can fail and drop parts onto the timing chain, causing immense damage to the engine.

do not drive it until you fix this...

to verify- use a length of wood, hammer handle, bit of fuel line or tubing as a stethoscope...

With a faulty vacuum system the vacuum pump piston or diaphram without being loaded, working, or if the spring is weak will ride off the cam and land with a click on the down slope of the cam.
When the piston broke in my 300d I had the same sound as you describe. The click went with a new piston and all my door locks worked fast and I could shut of the engine with the key

Have not yet checked vacuum pressure, but is it possible for the pump to produce suction if it is in fact what is ticking?

Forgot to mention that my tranny seems to be shifting at really low rpms as well unless I really give it some gas.

If it is the vacuum, is it difficult to repair/rebuild? I was thinking about ordering a kit from ********az.

is there a junkyard / pull-a-part near you? I would go get (in a different car) a vacuum pump off of another car and rebuild it. the kit is pretty simple to do. if yours is ticking, that bomb can go off any time.
