Engine Out... now what??

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=223898

after removing engine today:

broken flange on Oxygen Catalyst (looking for federal swap or another catalyst)... will turbo from federal interchange w/ California setup?

Apparent oil leak from head gasket down the rear of engine - anyone encounter this??

PS.. this engine is waaaayyy oversized for its power output.

Didn't have camera. This isn't a clear run down the back of the block. It is a collection of garbage appearing soaked after the engine was warmed. It was wiped, then it returned to an oily state afterwards along the length of the head gasket.

I know it is not the end of the world, just considering re-torqueing the head to spec.

Thanks.. that is re-assuring. I've read a post or two that recommended re-torqueing after the initial 1k-2k miles for earlier versions of these engines. Is this worthwhile or will the cure be a new head gasket?

I hate putting a leaky engine back in after I have it available to fix.

Youre right- only cure is to replace it.

It is irksome though, with the engine hanging by the head eyelets (by hoist) more oil seeps out as opposed to on the ground.

I have complete faith in your experience Johnef, your sig alone is testament. I cannot help but feel compelled to at least re-torque that head - is there anything negative that could come of this as long as I do not shift it. - it will be done cold.

I promised myself 'no head work' on this rebuild!!!

You can try to just retorque, but it is so much easier to change a headgasket with the engine out of the car. You also may want to look at the oil filter housing gasket, that is so easy to change out of the car, very hard to change inside. Oil cooler lines, front seal, rear seal, oilpan seal... anything that is leaking?
