95 E300 headliner repair

I also posted this in tech help:

I almost never ride with the windows open but my daughter took a ride with me and insisted on opening the sunroof and all the windows. A short time after this I noticed the headliner material hanging down in the middle of the roof. It was realy bothering me so I have removed the pannel and peeled back the side to reveal the area where it seperated. The foam padding is torn in places and it looks very crumbly in others.

Can I repair it with spray glue? Is it worth it, or can I buy one from MB with out spending a fortune. Is this best left to profesionals to fix and put back in the car? The attachments around the sunroof look imposible to put back tightly?

Headliner woes

Oh yes; same car, same problem!

I tried the "spot gluing" technique, to no avail. I eventually took the headliner and its styrofoam backing out (I suspect the crumbly part you observed is glue, since the styrofoam is pretty much indestructible), purchased new material (I can't remember the price, but it was less than $100 US), and dared to disassemble all the little bits around the sunroof. If you're very careful and diagram or memorise where everything comes from/goes around the sunroof, you'll be fine. Just take lots of notes.

The most important advice I can give is to clean the styrofoam backing thoroughly and to use *lots* of spray primer before you spray on the adhesive and lay down the new material over the backing. Also, getting the exact trim and fit of the material is important--you don't want to lay material over glue and then find you need to reposition or re-cut it.

Then again, I think you can have this procedure done for between $300-500 US, depending on the shop. I would probably have someone else do it if I had to do it again.

Good luck!
