300K miles shouldn't be bad if he's the original owner and has records of it's maintenance. If you're worried, get a pre-purchase inspection. If the body and interior are in good shape and it runs, it's probably worth $800.

Also, since it's a true "euro", are you sure it has 300K miles and not kilometers?

If it is a manual transmission (which I see you mentioning in a different post that it is), you could easily buy it and sell it for a lot more than $800. Manual 123's are in demand.

The W123 euro non turbo 300D automatics are faster than the equivalent US spec cars.

Many of the euro cars have the desirable manual climate controls, manual wind up crank windows and manual sunroof crank which means a lot lees to go wrong. If you are lucky it will have survived Gray Market importation with the coveted euro bumpers and euro lights on it.

If it is unrusty and unwrecked I would be all over it like a cheap suit in the rain for just $800

Yes, they both should consume no gas.

I think what is more important with the older cars is the condition of the engine. If you compare two equally maintained vehicles the difference won't be that dramatic. Compare a properly maintained N/A to a beat down turbo and the results will be very different.

The only euros that came with turbo diesels from the factory were TD's.

I would pass on an auto euro.
