Getting Outside Air at the Vents ALWAYS. Why?

In both my Benzes I've noticed that with the climate control off I still have outside air (cold in the winter and hot in the summer) coming out the vents. I'm guessing there's some kind of flap that's supposed to be Normally Closed that's not. Is that right? If that's the case, where is it (on a w123 and a w124)?

It's not that bad in winter... actually I was happy about it this past winter (don't laugh) because my blower motor was hosed and I'd turn the CCU to full hot and turn it on ECON and it'd let the hot coolant flow through the heater core, the cold air coming in from the high speed outside air coming in would pass the heater core and heat the car quite nicely even without the blower motor running (it was dead).

But not the case in the summer (not cool at all!)... I've repaired the blower and now all it does is warm up my A/C. I don't want outside air inside, I want to re-circ the cool air instead of slightly chill the hot outside air.

Looking for insight into this.
thanks!!
Nick

The recirc flap is supposed to open when the A/C is on. Check the actuator and valve that controls it.

Thanks Lance. Anyone got an idea where that's at?

Also, is the recirc flap the reason air is always coming in through the vents if the car is moving? I've never had this with any other car but MB's. When the vehicle is in motion there's always a breeze coming from the vents. It's weird. I have had GM's, Fords, and other old USA made stuff and never had a breeze like I do in MBs. It's not the end of the world but it's a little annoying and seems to be messing up my A/C's performance.

Heater always

1984 300d turbo 147k
check the mono valve on the engine fire wall pass side, pull the 2 pin elect plug and remove the 4 screws on top, engine cold, buy a repair kit this site, pull out the glove box and vacuum test the actuator top rear of glove box right side

I'd bet on the 123 that the mono valve is indeed torn. I haven't used the heat yet this summer to test it LOL It was 107F today!!!

But about the breeze problem I'm having. Is the actuator for the flap what you're talking about behind the glove box? Same place on a 124 body?

the re-circ flap is behind the glove box, if it is open you will see a big hole in the side top of the blower casing.
