Differential replacement

I am changing out a bum axle that I put in last year. Thankfully I purchased it 10 months ago and I actually still have the receipt.
I was just wanting to know if I put in the rear diff out of a 1983 240D (into my 1984 300D) would it give me better mileage?
What would the other effects of this transplant be?

Your 84 300D should have a 3.07 Diff. the 83 240D is either 3.46 or 3.69. If you go with the 240 Diff you will be going backwards in fuel milage. but will increase faster starts.

use a Diff from a 85 300D, it is a 2.88 which will increase your milage some, and drop your RPM`s a little.

Unfortunately NO, the ratio used in a 240D would take you in the wrong direction. A diff from an 85 300D, TD, or CD would give you a slight improvement. However unless the current diff is bad, the improved mileage and engine RPM is likely not worth the work involved.

Looks like a repeat of the above post, but at least we both agree.

I'll have to third that. Using a 240D 3.69 differential will reduce mileage.

There are some threads on putting the 2:47 Diff out of a W126 gasser into
a W123. Don`t know if you want to go that high of gearing. some of the
guys that have done it love it.

there are some trade off`s, little slower start off, but the pay off is at the
higher end. Lowers the RPM`s 400 to 500 rpm depending on what Diff you
started out with.

I have a 2:47, but not sure which car it`s going into as yet.

Put it in your SD..dig the 2.47, but it would be sweet to have another car with a 2.88.

The SD is a 3.07 and the 300D is 2:88.

I have the 160mph instrument cluster from the 380SE, that would good
in the SD, I think it goes up to 125MPH.

The 300D is our daily driver, and the SD ran good until I fixed it.
soon as I replace the crappy Palomino interior with the black interior I
have for it, replace the tires and wheels, upgrade the brakes to 2nd
generation vented rotors. And... and.... and.... well you know. the list
goes on.

so the 247 will go in the 123 I guess. just have to see what to do with
the slow running spedo. take off performance will drop some, but then
so has mine

Outstanding project. That rig is going to be sweet..be sure to hook up the 'econ' gauge as a 'boost' gauge!!
think the speedo is easier to adjust on the electronic sd..and vented rotors are sick.

EDIT:the speedo will match the 2.47, as that is what ratio was originally in the 380SE.
