Diesel purge question

New to MB, trying to get all of the maintenance issues that I'm sure haven't been done properly by the PO. There is a recommendation to change out the fuel filters after performing the diesel purge. I don't understand why this would be important, since the cleaning that takes place by a diesel purge is in the combustion portion of the engine, not the fuel lines itself, therefore there shouldn't be anything that is knocked loose to float downstream and clog the filters, right? Is that recommendation then just based on forming good habits, to change the filters often? Can I do a purge now that I have just replaced the fuel filter and not have to replace it again? How often should I replace the fuel filter? Thanks, Alex

DP is a feel good maintenance item. If it makes you feel the engine runs better then it works. In reality its 70% diesel in a can.

Almighty Diesel Curative?? Is it available at pepboys? Maybe I'll get 35 mpg by using ADC. I need a case.

70% Diesel? My most recent cans first ingredient is Naptha. Or rather, the first list on the "contents" list - Can't find the MSDS. Can someone produce?

Now, what is Naptha? That seems to be a confusing matter.

Bottom line seems to be that it seems to be a solvent, maybe it does something for cleaning out sludge. But a miracle in a can, it is not.

Maybe it also does something for raising the combustion chamber temperatures? Burn off/blow out a little extra carbon around the rings, valves, etc.?

For the price of one 500ml can of Lubro Moly, you can buy a gallon of "Naptha" at Home Depot/Ace.

Time to make a recipe. Or shun it as "snake oil"?

Don't know about the snake oil comment. The comment about needing to rework the injectors is probably valid.
I can tell you I did a DP on my 84 300SD yesterday and there was a noticable improvement in the engine running, it idles smother and isn't as noisy as before. How long it will last I haven't a clue. I do intend to either rework the injectors or replace them but the DP did make difference.

It might help some dirty worn injectors, but if it does you should really pull them and fix them.

When you see for yourself how dirty the returned "Purge" gets, your understanding will improve substantially.

I was doing some searching on injectors recently here, and came across a series of posts by "Beagle" - he made a good point against using diesel purge. It loosens up crud in the injector pump and puts it through your injectors. If your injectors are crudded up, then by all means take them apart and give them the disassembly and cleaning that they deserve. There is a good MB tech bulletin on cleaning injectors that I found posted as well. Search injector and cleaning.

the idle rpm goes up for about 50 during purge, and comes down again after purge at idle with regular diesel. is it normal? thanks.
