fuel tank pressurized on my 300sd

My 84 300 sd has pressure when I unscrew the fuel cap. Is this normal?

No

Something is clogged,I'd suspect the tank vent.

Where is it located?
Does it have a built in vent like most caps?

It is designed to have pressure in it,i dont recall the specification.Should the pressure go to high it will vent thru the cap. The tank vent if working correctly will allow air into the tank but not out. This info is in the MB shop manual CD version. My $.02 Don

The tank vent is under the car on the drivers side, just forward the L/R tire. kind of between the sub frame mount and muffler. It`s a bell shaped thing.
The 123 is in the same area.

how much pressure are we talking about? did the cap blow accross the parking lot, or just hiss a bit?
are you sure it's pressure and not vacuum?
a bit of pressure is normal unless it was colder when you took the cap off than when you put the cap on... vacuum is NOT normal.

The tank vent (under the tank near the return line, not in the fuel cap) in my W124 (1987 300D Turbo) vents both in and out. There's a spec for each direction. My '87 occasionally has a bit of pressure in it, especially on a hot day with a mostly empty tank. It feels like it is a lot of pressure but it must not be -- I removed the vent and tested it with an air compressor. It was good, about 1/2 psi (???) as I recall. Sorry I don't know what a W126 has but I'd bet it is similar, especially if (per Charlie) the 123 has the same thing.
