Most likely NOT a problem with "short" trips.

I wouldn't make long trips of more than 40 minutes though.

The turbodiesels have piston cooling jets which means a lot of heat is dumped into the oil even in normal operation. So, yes, you need it.

And lest we forget - it's even cooler in Europe and Euro. spec. turbo models have oil coolers just like the N. American ones.

I had the same thoughts about 1/2 through the install on my SD. With that said if it didn't need it they wouldn't have put it on. That DIY was off the worse I have tackled, and can't say there was anything learned if I was to do it again. Reminded me of those bar games made out of steel rods that you have to try and separate.

Imagine any parts store is going to have a generic oil temp gauge - you could probably reduce the fitting into the bottom oil filter line you blocked off. The male fitting the line screws onto can be removed from the oil filter canister.

also i was kind of thinking the oil valve to the cooler feed line did not work [always closed , because on start up my pressure gauge would pin itsself on max and never once hint of dropping , on the opening of the line.]

Both the SD and SDL will peg the 3 bar and stay there on idle until some serious running has happened. Even on real hot days in traffic with AC they still stay just above 2 bar at idle. Don't let me scare you off on installing the lines - just some things I am real anal with - this was definitely one of them. I didn't even need to replace but since I had the radiator, fan, and ac stuff off looked like an appropriate time.
