OM617 "De-Californication:" How & Why

I have an ex-SoCAL 1983 300D and was wondering how (and why) I might remove the CA emissions equipment on the motor. Someone else in these forums just mentioned that he planned to undo his CA equipment, so I thought it made sense to ask the rationale and specifics behind the move.

Thanks.

Why? Because its choked by a particulate filter. It has higher emissions, lower power, lower economy and lower reliability just to look cleaner out the tailpipe. Despite looking cleaner because it does not smoke, its actually dirtier than the federal model because it consumes more fuel and has higher HC and NOx emissions.

Removing it is as easy as swapping the intake/exhaust manifolds, oil supply/drain tubes, exhaust down pipe, cutting the air filter tube shorter and re-clocking the intake/turbine on the turbo to meet the ports.

Actually, there is really nothing to de-Californianize on your particular year vehicle. The '83 California version is identical to the Federal version.

Ah, good point. I usually equate Kalifornia=TrapOx.

You are right, there is no difference between the two in 83.

Thank you. That's good to know. I like it when there's nothing to do to get it up to speed.... I'm good at that one. :-)

Not so. My '82 Cali car has a big sticker on the window that states it's emissions.

I think all calif cars when new have a sticker stating what the emisions out the tail pipe are. so when they are smog checked they can`t be above that.
Your 83 doesnot have any additional emissions equipment. except for the EGR valve.

I think the 84, like the 85 has the different tach pick up on the bell housing. and maybe the computer box thing behind the passenger foot well kick panel. I think JIMMYL had a problem with that a couple months ago and a writeup.

now the 85 has all the wonderful CARB added emissions equipment.
I have had mine 11 1/2 yrs and runs great zoom zoom.

Kalifornia MB

I have one of these (85 300CD) and I am "testing" the EGR removal. but is there more that I can/should do and where is the write up?
It seems to get about 25-27 MPG and runs out nice.
