W123 Front Shocks

My '85 300D Turbo

Many threads with varying opinions saying how easy this is however, some warnings have been interjected.

Having searched and not found an authoritative link, would someone be able to provide one?

Top nuts off first w/vehicle weight fully loaded
Car up part way on lift or floor jack
Jack under lower control arm to control rate of drop in order to protect from the spring coming out (questionable if that would happen or not according to many)
I believe the next part I have found is rather vague:
Tilt shock forward to get a better position on one of the two lower retaining bolts.
What socket best fits these?

Please either provide a link or correct/add to what I have written. I realize it is supposed to be an easy DIY but I would just as soon not reinvent the proverbial wheel.

Thanks,
STeve

The lower bolts are best taken out with a 10mm 1/2" drive socket with an extension and breaker bar. The shock has to be tilted forward and back to get a straight down grip on it.

A piece of cake with the right tools.

The bilstein shock can be compressed by the weight of the car and a hose clamp put around the rubber dust boot to hold it compressed then the car jacked up. This makes getting it out a piece of cake.

If the shock is not gas filled or its completely shot this might not be necessary.

Tom,
Thanks. This is one of today's projects yet I knew I'd be better off having the play-by-play from someone that has previously done the job before I got started. Too many projects to keep taking my old stubborn way of "I can figure it out as I go".
Thanks again,
Steve

STeve,
Just make sure the socket is of the 12-point variety. A six-point socket won't work.

I found a 10mm box wrench to work best for me on the lower bolts. Don't worry about the spring, it won't go anywhere.
