81-82 OM616 Flywheel & pressure plate the same?

I'm getting an '81 OM616 stripped from a rustbucket. Owner wants to keep flywheel & pressure plate to sell separate w/ tranny. Will my flywheel -'82 OM616 fit & balance on the '81?

It will fit, but you will need to have it matched to the balance of the original flywheel.

You should trade him your old '82 flywheel once you remove it.

That's what I was thinking. I called a friend who used to be a mechanic, and he said a flywheel is just balanced by itself, and isn't a system balancer, so 1 vote yes, 1 vote no. Anyone certain who cares to tip the balance & clarify?

Thanks

Some are balanced to the engine and some are balanced to zero, there is no real pattern to what engine got which. You have to check both flywheels to see which they are and what you need.

I have done several and never balanced them. The last one, a ring gear spun on the flywheel. I replaced the flywheel with one I had lying around that DIDN'T have witness marks, meaning they were not balanced with the crank. This subject has been hashed over allot and I think thats the way it works. Seems like it, from what i've done. If you cant find the "mark", go for it. Its cheep to have it resurfaced if you can.

The mark can be nearly imposable to see however, so skip balance testing at your own risk.

Exactly. My 280e was balanced with the crank and the witness mark was nigh onto impossible to discern.

Be sure to mark the position of the flywheel to the crank before removing.

Some fine emery cloth and elbow grease will expose the mark if its there, there need not be any guessing about it.

I don't know about that.

Tom- Don't you have a picture of the mark on the flywheel of your 280? From what I remember the mark is extremely faint.

I'm not sure a picture would show anything. It was so faint it looked like a hologram and you had to have the light just so to even see it!

I don't have a pic.
