Axle replacement question. 80 300SD
Hi all.
I have to replace the pass. side axle on my 116 80 300SD and i was wondering if anyone knew what other models (if any) shared that axle. From my research the 81-85 126 models are different part numbers and the other 116 models are also different part numbers. It would appear that the axle was only used in the 78-80 300SD. Anyone have any insight? Thanks |

Not insight but it is easy to find out.
Go to your favorite internet parts seller and enter your cars information and record the part number for the Axle on your car. Pick and enter another model of the same year and look up the part number of the Axle that goes with that model. Compare the part numbers. If they are the same they are interchangeable. If you are still not sure pick another parts seller and do the same thing.

Yeah..
Ive been doing that. It appears that Mercedes made one axle only for the 300SD from 78-80. I was just hoping against hope that someone knew if another axle fit the car but had a different part number. I can easily find an axle for 81-85 for 140 bucks. The axle for the 80 is about 260 plus core. Since my axle fell out in the middle of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel between Norfolk and Hampton and was run over my a big truck I have no core So the final price for me will be 360 bucks. Ill keep checking the salvage yards. Thanks.

I don`t think the axle is only for those 3 yrs. I just looked in the parts section, and the axle for 1980SD and a 1985 380SE are the same part #.
So do some more searching, and maybe ask the parts guys to check some newer years and see what they come up with. check out your local junk yards and look under the car and start checking axles. most of them have tore up boots, but every once in a while there is a good one. I pulled one off a 123 that was almost perfect for $25.00. Charlie

wow
I was looking on the German Star website and it shows different axles while auto parts warehouse shows that the 80 300SD and the 85 380SE are the same. Who do I believe? The axles are very similar. I havent been able to tell them apart by sight. I guess I could go over and ask the dealer. Thanks for the help guys, I cant wait to get my baby going again.

Not sure about the W126 cars swapping, but I am pretty sure that any W116 axle would work. They are a lot of 450SE/Ls and 280SE s out there.
