Rotella Full Synthetic 5W-40...

...now $20.00 a gallon at Wal-Mart?! A week ago it was $16.42.

Mobil 1 Turbodiesel Truck isn't looking so expensive now, eh?

My engine ran louder on Mobil 1 than it does on the Rotella....Mobil 1 is super ultra uber expensive to use in a 617, because you can only safely go about 5k anyways till the soot levels are too high (especially on my engine)....oil changes run about $63 total with Mobil 1.....but only about $45 on rotella, I'll be using the rotella....unless I win the lottery.

I haven't been to walmart lately but the price had increased to 16.89 a gallon up from 16.24...... a $3+ jump seems unlikely. Either way its still only $17.99 at autozone, which is where I usually get it anyways. (Don't like to support evil walmart)

Is it white bottle or "synthetic" blue bottle?

It is true, it's not really synthetic, it's only a group-3 oil. Many "experts" do believe it is a very good oil due to it's superior additive package. I personally don't know enough about it to say that but from what I've read, I'll use it in my car.

The dino, white bottle stuff. When I buy synthetic I spring for full synthetic.

The way I look at it is that the "fake" synthetic stuff is WAY better than the oils that were available when the engine was designed, so its plenty good for it.

Shell Rotella-T not a real synthetic? Darn. I was really planning on buying some in the hopes it was a real synthetic oil.

Its perfectly good for these engines, they were designed with oils far inferior in mind, so a "fake synthetic" oil of today is far far better than the oils of their day. The most important thing is changing it often enough....every 3k on dino oil and every 4-5k on synthetic for the 617, longer on synthetic for the newer diesels.

If I lived in the south (way south) I'd probably be running dino rotella on 2500-3000 mile changes....but it gets way too cold up here for 15w40 in the winter....so I stick with the 5w40 year round, works great and helped a lot in the winter as it flows so much better.

Fake, as in group III is cracked dino oil that has properties similar to synthetic so they call it synthetic.

Thats why they can sell it for so cheap.

Either way, its better than dino. And full synthetic is way too expensive to use in a motor like the 617, where soot severely shortens the oil lifespan. If I had a 602, 603 or 606 I'd probably be using Mobil 1 since I could run it longer.

I called both Advance and Autozone this AM, prices were $15.99 Autozone and $17.99 Advance. Walmart here is $20 also.
I use this oil in everything I've got including our Kubota diesel mower.
It has to be an excellent oil since it's designed for long haul truckers.

Flat cam tappets

The additive package is the most friendly to the upper portions of our engines.
Especially since the Refinery Bas-Turds foisted the non-backwards compliant
(Lubricity Wise and P wise) ULSD upon us!
