My 'New' Mercedes

Here she is! I just bought a 1980 116 this morning for $600.

I am buying her to transplant the engine and transmission into my 126 1984 300SD. I can't believe how smooth the 116 transmission is. The body itself has around 250k on it. The engine was supposedly a transplant from a car that got rear ended and supposedly it has 130k on it but there was no verification. It ran pretty well. I don't know what car the engine came out of but it is definitly a 617.xxx turbo.

The 116 is pretty rusted out on the bottom as you can see. If I didn't have a 126 in pretty decent shape I would just fix up the non-working parts on the 116 and drive it until it eventually rusted through but I might-as-well put it into the 126 with no rust other than a few rock chips.

Here are some more. The first is my 126.

You can see the bottom is pretty rusted out. Ahhh, life in MN.

If they're the originals, the hood and deck lid should be aluminum. Save them along with the springs holding them up. Those of us withs 6.9 want them.

John Olson is the nearest guy I can think of to you.

You do know the W116 engine hp is only 115 HP and the W126 is 123 HP, and the torq are totally diffrent from each other, may be alittle slow on acceleration...

The '79 turbo engine only has the lower HP. You can swap the valve-train from a later engine in to gain the extra HP on the '79 engine.

I'm not following exactly what you are referring to? I'm assuming you mean the entire hood with springs? The deck lid? I'm not sure what that is.

I would like to save as much as possible before I scrap it.

If I cared about 8hp I wouldn't be driving a 25 year old car!

Plus, like I mentioned I haven't even looked at the engine beyond the fact that it is a turbo diesel inline 5. I'm assuming it is a 116 engine but since it was a transplant it could be from a 123 or a 126 anyway. The spedometer is working but is off and the tac does not work at all so it may be possible...

PS- I am planning on parting it out. I will post a thread in the parts section soon when I get around to my project which hopefully is sometimes in the next month.

But as I already got a PM asking if I was going to part it out I figured I would clarify....yes I am.

Nope, no sunroof. I was a bit disappointed for my hour and a half drive as I'm use to one in my '84.

I just listed the car in the parts section and I have begun my journey. I have most of the motor attachements detached and should be pulling the engine on Friday.

I also have pulled most engine accesory parts and the front end parts. The listing is here-
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=231481
I'm getting the body towed away in a few weeks so if you need anything off that let me know asap!

My goal is to have the engine and transmission transplanted into my 84 by the end of September!

Deck lid = trunk lid.
