1981 300TD odometer gears [ odo ]

Why do I always end up with one year only stuff!!??
I pulled the cluster on Smash today [1981 300TD] to repair the odo gear situation. I have done it on several W123's and have the procedure down.
Well, before I pull a cluster I always try and put some slack in the speedo cable. I shove it alittle bit into the firewall so the cluster will pull out farther. Weird, I can't find the speedo cable there. [speedo was working]
So, I pull the cluster and immediately notice something odd. No speedo cable and 2 weird electrical connectors to the back of the speedo. Unhooked everything and took the cluster to the bench. Took it apart and pulled out the speedo portion, and this is something I've never seen before.
I'm guessing this is similar to the SD's electronic speedo setup. My question, and yes I searched, is this: Are the gears in this the same as in an SD speedo?? I am fixing to switch laptops and attach pics of this. There are clearly two gears that are missing teeth.
One thread I found listed a site that sold SD gears {odometergears.com}for $25 bucks a gear or 3 for $75 or so. I just can't find any supporting info as to whether these gears are the same as the SD's.

What I understand is that the 1981 300TD is the only year that uses the electronic speedo. And I do believe, but do verify just in case I am not correct, it is the same setup as the first model year w126 300 SD.

So the 1981 W126 300SD is also different from the '82-'85 SD speedo/odo's??

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply the 1981 SD speedo is unique. They should be the same as the 1982 also... But would have to check the part number on the face.

The website odometergears.com sells the gears you'll need to fix that odometer. Usually one or all of those plastic gears in your pictures loose their teeth. I would replace all of them. I think there are three. If you don't replace all of them the new ones will brake the teeth of the old ones in a hurry. It's an easy swap. They are all just pressed on. So you can pull them off and put the new one on.

Jimmy, if it's of any help at all, that looks just like the cluster of gears in my 84 SD.

Cool. Sure would have been cheaper just to redo the pot metal gear of the other year's models. Oh well.......
[Dave will probably have some for sale. He has everything.....]

Mmmmm.... 70's design electronics......

Thanks for the pictures. I've never seen an 81 TD speedo apart before and I wasn't sure if the 81-only electric speedo thing was even true.

There was an 81 TD in the junkyard here about two weeks ago. If you want its speedo, I can run by there tomorrow and see if the car is still there. (Please give me an excuse to go to the junkyard. )

Jimmy? Are you talking about me? I have no idea why you keep calling me "Dave" when my name is "daw"....maybe that w looks like a ve ?

I just checked the wagon pics; sorry man. The remaining wagon is an 82. Now, if you need an SLS pump, valve, hydraulic fluid tank, fuel expansion tank, or body parts, just let me know.

I still think you and Dan just need to drive a truck and bring some tools. I'll even help.

OK "Daw", duly noted!
I have a complete extra wagon SLS system out in the garage on a bench. I'm hoping I'll never need any of it! Just wish I had some decent CV axles laying around. One on the cheap wagon is slinging, and the other one looks like it wants to.....
