Mercedes to GM trans adapter. Available!

Just a FYI these folks have made a adapter and flywheel that works for a GM standard trans. http://4x4labs.com/dieselconversions.shtml

Works for the following trannys SM420, SM465, NV3500, NV4500, NV5600,

This is for the 617 engine.

Its good news for anyone doing a conversion or needing a really durable manual trans.

I find this interesting:
Quote:
We are developing a dry sump oiling system for this engine so the oil pan can be shortened up considerably. With a dry sump system you can flip upside down and still be running without damage to the engine. This will be advantageous for the offroad market since rollovers are relatively common.

Thanks for the heads-up!

If I am not mistaken, the NV5600 is a six speed!

Wonder what kind of Fuel Economy we could get if we could get the RPMs down to 2200 at 70MPH. I'd bet still pretty close since it'd take more guts from the engine to turn 70MPH at 2200 RPMs.

Anyone achieved 70MPH at 2200? I'm guessing someone here's got that kind of gearing now. I've read about rear end and manual 5 speed swaps etc...

on the other hand... and of course someone here had to say it are we really saving money by putting a 'high quality' GM transmission in our Mercedes. Replacing transmissions every 100k isn't exactly cheap! I'd put money on a MB transmission outliving one from a GM by 2x the mileage any day. But I do have an 84 GMC 6.2 Diesel Suburban with 260k on what I believe is the original transmission! I suppose that says something.

Wow! I am interested in the flywheel/clutch setup if it is heavier duty than a 200D-240D flywheel/clutch. I wonder what it would take to get their flywheel to work with my 1967 fintail 4-speed manual on-the-column.

I really have no idea, but would'nt a manual trans last longer than an automatic, being from GM or not???

Im turning about 2200 at 70, im running a 4spd manual and a 2.24 rear gear.

As far as the gm trannys go, these are truck transmissions, designed to handle 2-4X the torque that the 617 is putting out. So I doubt that you would ever ever have trany issues except for the fact that truck transmissions are gonna be balky to shift.

not to mention the larger clutch is gonna hold up much stronger and be cheaper than our current options.

This is a step in the right direction. Obviously we would love a bellousing that could make a t5(plentiful, cheap, durable) bolt right up.

Nifty. Are there any truck automatic trannies?

That seems to be a weak spot in these vehicles, the automatic setup -- something more generic and widely available would be awesome.

Looks like they went all out making a flywheel and everything. Nice. Kind of steep though $1000.
Which side is the starter wart for a t5?

5. What are the TQ and HP #'s for the om617?

Power specs vary from year to year. The range is from 79hp - 125lb/ft for the non-turbo to 135hp 181lb/ft for the later turbo engines. If you do some web research there is a bit of variance in these numbers. There are reports of 170hp and 200lb/ft easily attained by adjusting fuel and turbo pressure.

$1k for a flywheel and plate seems a bit spendy. I would be interested in this for my '48 Dodge project otherwise...
