Fuel Filters (changed)
Wow.
The '82 has been sitting un-driven for around 8 months with some small issues (now fixed). After my wife drove for a day or so, I opened the hood to do basic filter/fluid changes, and here's what I found...nasty, so I changed it today, along with the spin-on. Here's the pic. Shooo....that looks terrible! It was not like that when we quit driving it 8 months ago...it was in need of a new filter, but not filled to the brim with all that crap. Is this normal when not driven for a long period? |

No expert but it looks like rust. The Algae closer to black in color and slimy looking. I guess there could be a combination of both going on.
I would get some insurance; a set of new filters in the trunk in case they plug up again.

Rust.
That is a classic example of why I dump out my fuel filter every oil change, just to see what's in there. I don't normally replace filters until 25k, but I want to know what's in there on an ongoing basis. People who don't replace filters until the car quits running are very foolish, in my opinion. (Sorry PEH)

I'd change to two fuel filters and drive the car, then remove the new filters and see if they are "rusty" looking. If they are the fuel tank might have some issues.

Thanks. It's definitely rust.
I generally change the filters on schedule, but didn't plan on the car sitting for so long without being run, so I just didn't realize this would pop up...I replaced the filters and have spares in the trunk...we're going to drive it today and have a look at the filters when we get back. It ran fine before they were changed, btw, but runs much better now. It's also been washed/waxed Since it is our "3rd" car we were getting it ready to sell it in favor of motorcycles, but after driving it around the past couple of days I think we have decided to keep it. Motorcycles can wait...it's refreshing to drive the 300 after commuting in my slowpoke 240 all week. |

How much fuel was in the tank while the vehicle was "stored?"

Approx. 1/2 tank.

Perhaps moisture did a job on the top half of the tank.

At the very least, I think I would pull the tank hose from where it connects to the hard fuel line, and drain a quart or two into a clear plastic bottle. What comes out will tell you if you need to drain the tank or not. The fact that rusty crap made it through the prefilter to the main filter is not a good sign with regard to what's in the tank.
