How hard is it to convert an 87 190E to a diesel engine/tranny?

There is a very clean 87 190E for sale for $600 with a bad engine. The thought has crossed my mind to buy it and install a 5 cylinder early 80's model diesel/tranny. I know there would be many wiring/vacumn issues. How hard would it be? How much would I expect to pay for a used deisel engine/tranny? Thanks.

I would recommend an OM602 for that chassis since (I think) the '87 190D had that engine from the factory, might be no more expensive to buy from a junkyard and a lot easier to adapt to the chassis.

Early 80's won't work without lots of modifications and it won't fit the transmission. Jeremy is right, find an OM601 or 602.

Exclamation Some stuff to consider.....

I own an '85 190E and an '84 190D......I was going to attempt what you are considering....however, after a thorough examination of both cars, I decided to put all of the good parts onto the 190D......

What I do know is.....
There is a slight difference in the electrical system....

I've done similar.

I just finished changing a '93 190E 2.6 into a 2.5 Turbodiesel 5 -speed. You can do it if you are patient and thorough.

I probably went deeper than I needed to, changing a lot of the wiring harness just to make sure that everything would work out right. I had the entire dash out, and basically stripped the interior to the firewall. I now realize that I didn't need to go that far.

The reason I did this was that the '93 was an absolutely rust free, very clean car from Atlanta. The 2.5TD was a rustbucket from northeast Ohio with a bad transmission.

The finished car is great, but it takes a lot of work and commitment to get it to turn out right and use all the correct parts.

Thanks!

I appreciate your comments. I think I'm going to pass on this one.....Unless I talk myself into it again.
