What is this?

Hello. Does anybody know what this is? It's on the injection pump of my replacement engine (1984 300D, I've been told...). My old engine does not have this component. There is a wiring loom coming off of the right side with three wires which have been cut (junkyard removal).

Thank you!

I think it's a rack position sensor. Is your '84 engine a Cali motor? I thought only 85's had them, but often Cali 84's have what fed 85's do....
I'm not sure what they do, or if they do anything.....
My '85 wagon has one.
{only speaking of W123's. Don't know anything about W126's}

My 85's got the same thing, and I have no idea what it is either.

Rack position sensor for the EGR computer. Same thing as a throttle position sensor on a g@sser so the computer can determine how much to open the EGR.

Rack position sensor! Thanks!!!

I'm in California and the junkyard is here in CA so it probably is a Calif car. It is marked as an '84.

So my next question is what to do with it?! Can I just ignore it?
