Oil Cooler Advice Needed
The oil cooler in my 1979 W116 300SD is leaking very badly and I have had a hard time locating a used replacement.
I bought one recently that was described as "both threads are in good condition". Well, more than half the threads are stripped off. Is this considered good condition and okay to use? I want an honest opinion. Also, it was wedged into a box with no padding and as a result it got a bit squished. I can probably bend the tabs back so it will work, but it being aluminum I'm almost afraid to. When I move the oil cooler it sounds like there are ball bearings rolling around inside it. Would it still be a good idea to use it? I'd hate to get chunks of whatever in my engine. Should I send the cooler back to the seller? I paid $100 for it plus shipping. Right before this I bought another oil cooler that I think I paid $130 plus shipping for (after receiving a different oil cooler than was pictured and it was the wrong type anyway). I was told it does not leak, but why would there be old-looking oil sludge on it (last pic)? I feel like I am getting taken. Every time I buy an oil cooler it seems to have major problems and I am getting fed up.

having been through my own issues recently buying used parts I totally sympathize.
Do not use those threads the way they are, you could lose oil pressure ina variety of ways. if something is loose at all inside, it needs R&R..bad please pm with info about who sold you this. I wont say anything, just curious and concerned. I am not tryig to sell my crap, just help out. I have an oil cooler if you are interested; it has the two threads on the bottom, is that correct? much better condition, much cleaner. Will send pic first.. name your price. |

Looks like you were sent a piece of junk. send it back and hope you get your money back, probably be out the shipping.
the threads get stripped sometimes when removing the oil cooler lines. the cooler being aluminium, and the fitting being steel. corosion between the two metals, and you are screwed. which brings up "Screwed Nipples" Screwed Nipples is a repair kit Part# 915013-013002 from the dealer. www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=104244 be sure to use anti-seiz compound on the threads. Iam not familiar with the W116 body and I don`t see many in the JY. I wonder if a cooler from a W123 or W126 could be made to fit? charlie

Don't buy critical parts used. Get a new one.

Return Immediately
YES, you are being ripped off.
This is an extremely important part and should not be replaced with a used unit if you can avoid doing so. May I suggest that you check on **************, they have a free guide indicating which parts are "OK" to buy used and which ones should definately be purchased new. P.S. Your motor is at stake so what is the gamble worth to you? Dave H... |

I know it's common for the threads to get damaged upon removal, but when the item is advertised as having good threads I think it is misleading.
The W116 diesel oil cooler is one-of-a-kind. It was only made for 3 years (1978-1980). One from a W123 or W126 can be made to fit with custom bracketry, but I would rather not do it. I would have bought a brand new unit, but the cheapest I could find was $400, and that was from Mercedes Source. I only have about $100-$200 of spending money each month after I pay bills, which usually gets spent on maintenance items for my car, so I can not afford a new one. I will send this part back to the seller. He claims it has a replacement warranty. Thank goodness I have not left him feedback yet.

If you want to avoid having to return the cooler, you could install steel hose nipples to replace the aluminum ones, as recommended above. That way, you would eliminate the problematic aluminum fittings for good. |

I informed the seller I would like a refund. It's nice to know the fittings can be replaced if needed. By the time the oil cooler lines start leaking (they look fine for now) I will probably buy a brand new oil cooler (and use plenty of anti-sieze on the threads), but for now I am hoping to get by on the current lines and a good used cooler. I still have the first cooler I bought, but I have reason to think it might be a leaker. The good side is it doesn't sound like it has any particles rolling around inside it and both threads are decent. If it does leak, it is probably not as badly as the one currently in the vehicle. It's a bother that I must remove the radiator to swap out the oil cooler. The A/C radiator is in front of the cooler and won't let the cooler bolts slide out for its removal.

A radiator shop could test it for you. And probably repair it if required.

Thats too bad Squiggle, did you get it from a guy in WV? Sounds like it was packed the same way as an SD intake I received recently... the only cushioning was oily dead leaves.

That cooler is scrap metal, get your money back.
Buy a new one, not worth risking your engine on critical parts such as that.

I am parting a 116 right now. I have the oil cooler out. I cut the old cooler lines to ensure I wouldn't strip the threads. I can send it to you that way to ensure the threads are still on. PM if you are intersted.
I haven't tested it but in the short while I drove the car (the bottom rusted through) there were no leaks from the cooler. If you buy it and it does leak I'll refund your money.
