just exactly how do you get a W210 E300 fan clutch off?

I was helping a buddy this weekend fix a motor mount. Turns out the broken mount let the motor sag enough, it broke the fan, fan shroud, made the electric fans noisy, it was just bizarre.

So... I'm helping fix things, needed the broken fan off, figured I just grab the fan clutch and all in one shot. It looks like it's held on by one allen bolt. Is it left hand threads. I tugged hard on that allen and it won't move.

Ended up just taking the fan off, cheeze grater effect on the nuckles.... .

So.. Is there a better way to get off the fan and or clutch on a 99 E300?

The 8mm Allen-head cap screw that holds the fan/clutch to the pulley is a standard right-hand thread. I use an old-fashioned L-shaped Allen wrench with a short (2 feet) length of 1/2 inch steel pipe for leverage. (Unhooking the fan shroud and draping it over the fan will give you more access room.) Lacking the proper tool for holding the pulley, I use the serpentine belt to hold the pulley, sometimes with a Vice-Grip pliers to clamp the belt tightly around the pulley. Once the screw has been broken free, you can unscrew it the rest of the way by hand and remove it. The fan/clutch and shroud can then be pulled out together.

I found the trick on those bolts is to stick the allen wrench in a copper pipe for a bit of leverage, and to save your hands. If its super tight you may need to use a stronger pipe...

The W210's are a bit tighter, on my W126 I can get a 3/8 drive in their with an allen socket.

Pull the metal crossmember and rad clips and pull everything forward a few extra inches. Put cardboard between fins and knuckles....

Terry, does the turbo version intercooler make the fan-to-radiator fit extra tight on '98-99 vehicles? The OM606NA has lots of room.

It is tight enough that a 1/4" drive rachet and bit is going to hit the rad fins in my expirience.

Removing the 5 bolts attaching the crossmember and pulling every forward 2" helps immensely.
