Should I replace OM602 Vacuum Pump
My '87 190D 2.5 Turbo engine has only 1 location where it is dripping a little oil. The engine has approximately 225K miles on it. The leak is coming from the front cover of the vacuum pump. It is not leaking from where the pump mounts to the block. It is dripping out from behind the front cover of the vacuum pump. This cover appears to be some kind of a crimp fit over the nose of the pump.
When I look at Fastlane for a replacement pump, I see that the front cover shown in the photos is bolted on. Has anyone taken the front cover off of one of these pumsp? Is there any kind of replaceable seal behind this cover? I do not want to replace the entire pump with a $400 unit just so that I can stop a very slight oil leak (maybe 2 or 3 drops on my garage floor overnight). Any help would be appreciated. Steve M.

The pump without bolt heads on the cover is considered to be failure prone and if it fails can pretty much destroy your engine as the broken parts can get caught in the cam chain and break it,then the pistons hit the valves and its new engine time! Do a search on here for 602/603 vacuum pump failures. Don

Vacuum time bomb
GSXR had a Catastrophic Vacuum pump Failure recently (He caught it before

Thanks for the info and links guys. As I search a little deeper, the more paranoid I am that mine will "Kersplode" and take out the rest of the engine.
Is there any one brand of preferred pump? I see that Fastlane offers both the Pierburg and the Hella pumps. I have also seen one listed on Ebay with the letters "YS" stamped into the front cover. Does anyone know what these are? This is the kind of job that I only want to do once, and do it right, especially when spending $400 or so for preventative maintenance parts. SteveM.
