oil filter housing location

I know this sounds stupid but I am in the process of my first oil change and I don't want to mess anything up. Is the oil filter housing the round black thing with a huge nut on top located between the intake manifold and the firewall? Thanks

Thats it. I think it is 36mm from memory. The big oring in the box goes on the lid and the two lil ones on the end of the shaft connected to the lid.

Hold the lid over a hard surface and bang it down a time or two to pop the old filter off the shaft.

Thanks for the help. I just finished my first oil change on this car. I used a beck antley filter and the three new orings, and used 7.5 quarts of mobile1 5w40 synthetic turbodiesel truck. The only thing i didn't do was replace the copper washer on the drainplug, and after checking the parts store on this forum i see that they are only sold in packs of 100. I am planning on doing my next oil change after 6500 miles and getting an oil analysis done then to. By the way, 7.5 quarts is just a hair below halfway of min and max on my dipstick. Does this sound normal? Thanks again

To check the fill level, warm the engine to operating temp, turn it off and check it a few minutes later.

Mine is usually 8 qts.

When properly filled it will appear slightly overfilled if you were to check it cold.

Wrong, he has a 606 diesel in a 1999 vehicle. So in fact he is right.

If I may make a suggestion, I would consider sucking the oil out of the engine through the dipstick holder. Pella manufactures a non-electric hand pump operated one that sells in the neighborhood of the mid $30 range. Makes for a clean and easier job, and you don't have to remove the sound panels below, or be concerned with the drain plug issues. Using this method keeps the job clean and simple.

Thanks for your suggestion, but i'm not really to sure about that concept. I'm just not too sure that sucking the oil out would get all of the dirty oil and crud that might settle at the bottom of the pan. From my experience the sound panels were not much trouble at all, and the location of the drain bolt being on the side of the drain pan was easy...all the oil flowed right into my container, no spills or mess. Anyone else have any thoughts on sucking the oil out?
