New Trap Oxidizer thread!!

since i bought my 300SDL i have been doing alot of internet searches looking for a new cylinder head, one thing i saw quite a bit of was people saying that mercedes removed their trap oxidizer for free....
of the documents i have seen, the trap was removed from the engine compartment and an oxidation catalyst was installed and relocated to under the car. was there a point when the ox cats were removed completely? and do they cause any known issues if left inplace? see original trap issue service campaign below

I have read (here) about clogged ox-cats. never experienced it.

As the trap-ox is upstream of the turbine, it can damage the turbo. The ox-cat is downstream, so it can restrict exhaust flow but its disintigration can't send debris upstream into the turbine blades.

On some higher mileage VWs with the ox cats, especially those that are tuned and make a lot of soot, you see some plugging. But generally they just stop working well after some time. The one on my TDI isn't doing much anymore.

The FSM includes a back-pressure test for a plugged trap cat so apparently it can happen.

Thumbs up

I say remove the Trap Ox from underhood (if you still have it) yourself. This way you'll retain the catless downpipe...

Most 603s have the trapless pipes so finding them isn't too difficult.

I know of one in the local junkyard, I can grab it if somebody wants one.
