Unhappy Help - Motor Mount Nightmare - I Need A Part

So after reading countless threads, reading the diesel giant how-to, and buying all of the parts, I finally thought I was ready to swap out my oil cooler lines, motor mounts, and engine shocks. My first real hurdle came when the driver's side bottom bolt for the motor mount rounded out. A new drill bit and a little terrible time spent under the car and that problem was solved. Things were all falling into place tonight when I was installing the brand new (just to be safe) bolt under the passenger side motor mount and the bolt sheared in two. I don't know if the problem was with my torque wrench or with the new bolt, but it is done now. The bolt sheared even with the bottom of the passenger side mounting arm and I am not sure I am going to be able to get it out. I am in the process of removing the arm, but am hung up on a very rusty bolt just under the turbo that is attached to a bracket that goes over one of the four mounting bolts. I grab my dremel from the basement and of course I only had one cut off wheel left and it was not quite enough to make it all the way through the nut on the bolt. I had to call it quits for the night because I am just so frustrated and was about to hurt the car or more likely myself. I have been on my bike all week while I did the work and was really hoping to be driving again tomorrow. I am going to pick up some sort of bolt remover or easy out tomorrow, but want to prepare for the worst just in case. Does anyone have a passenger side support arm laying around for an '85 300TD? Believe me, I know what a hassle it is to remove from the car, but maybe someone has one already off or you have an engine out of the car that it would be easy to remove from. Any help would be appreciated. I am going kayaking in WV this weekend, but will be back on Sunday. I need a mental break for a few days anyway on this one.
Thanks!
Shane

Cool, im doing the same job on a car right now! I had to convert my engine from a w123 chassis to a w126 so I should have two w123 arms laying around somewhere. They may be stripped out though. I think i stripped the driveside one but the pass one may still be good. Ill take a look when im out there again tonight.

But yeah these bolts are ridiculous. You have to make sure the bolt head is clean before you put a wrench in it and if you don't align it PERFECTLY it will strip out the aluminum arm on the way back in.

I love this forum!

If your passenger side arm is not stripped out, I will definitely take it from you. Just let me know how much you want for it.
Thanks!

You should be able to drill into the bolt and get it out with an easy-out.
Also, always buy grade 8 bolts. You can probably get away with grade 5 but for a few pennies more you can have peace of mind.

I was in Ace Hardware one day and there was a guy buying bolts for his motorcycle brakes. He was buying regular bolts from the bin's. I stopped him and told him to get grade 8 bolts. Can you imagine losing brake bolts on a motorcycle?

I changed my oil cooler lines and it was a major pita!!!
The job actually went well, new lines & engine mounts. BUT when I did a test one of them leaked. It was broken at the fitting on the oil cooler. I only went a quarter or half turn past hand tight!
Had to do the whole job all over again.
And to make it worse I may have stripped the passenger side bolt.

Bolts From the Dealer

I really hope I can get the bolt leftover to drill out. The bolts I got were actually from the dealer. I will not know if I have any oil leaks until I fill her back up. The oil cooler lines were not too bad. The top one came right off. The bottom one was stubborn, so I cut the hose and pulled the cooler out of the car to work on it. I used a ton of kroil, but the threads still ended up a little less than perfect. Fingers are crossed!

Question Someone Please Help...

Ok, It is officially official. I definitely need a new passenger side motor support arm. WV kayaking was a great way to take my mind off the car and all of the bike riding to work is definitely good for me, but I really want to be driving my car again. The broken bolt must have been cross threaded into the mount. I tried really hard to not let it cross thread and I thought I had it, but even with very careful bolt extractor work I could not get it to budge. The bolt extractor had a great hold, but even with me pulling the trigger all the way on my drill it would not move. I only ended up letting some of the smoke out of my drill. Does anyone out there have a passenger side support arm from an OM617 for a W123 hey can sell me? I think it would need to be from a 1982-85 car as the engine shock mount is a little different. Please help me.
Thanks,
Shane

Sorry to hear about your problem Shane. I don't have a passenger side motor support arm for a 617.952 but I can give you some info.

The part # should be 617 223 40 04

On very early 617.952s, up to engine # 5359, the part numbers were 617 223 18 04 and 617 223 42 04.
I've heard rumors there were some 1980/81 300TDs which had 617.952s in them and these numbers may pertain to them.

Since yours is an 85 and your engine # should be much higher than 5359, the part # should be 617 223 40 04.
I don't think your's being a Euro model should matter.

Unfortunately the pass. side engine arm is only for the 617.952 and no other motors.
The bummer about this is that the driver side engine arm for the 617.952 is the identical one found on the 240D.

You might want to post a WTB for your pass. side engine arm in the parts forum.

Making Progress

After finding out a new support arm would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $400, I was able to find a used one locally for $40. I was pretty happy with the deal and made a good bit of progress tonight. I managed to mount the new support arm, install both motor mounts and engine shocks, and install a new transmission mount. All that remains for tomorrow is to replace my dented lower oil pan, fill her with oil, and check for leaks. I hope to be driving again soon...

What was the torque value that you used?
