Engine oil

1987 300SDL Whats the Best Oil to use....?

Heard too many different things..

Cars got 187k on it and will most likely get very little driving about half way through this oils tenure...

Thanks

The best oil to use would be Mobil Delvac 1 / Mobil 1 Turbodiesel - truck, or other premium diesel-rated synthetic (RedLine et al).

HOWEVER, it is debatable whether you need "the best oil", it would also be well within your car's needs to use Shell Rotella or Mobil Delvac (non-synthetic oils).

Your choice whether you want to spend the extra $$, especially if you don't live in a cold climate and don't expect to run extended change intervals.

I live in Conn.... I'm not going to be driving it much this winter though and will probably change it in the spring.... It will get a start up and warm up every week or so though, and may be in a heated garage

Should i go with Rotella its cheap at the local wal mart... embarrassing but im in college and can't afford not to shop wal mart

Redline is the best oil any money can buy, but it ain't cheap. They use the best base stock any money can buy, so thats why a gallon is $37.

Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Mobil's Delvac 1 are all supurb oils.

I live in CT as well, and I just park it all winter. My car will be going into storage next month and coming out in April. For long term storage starting it all the time is just about the worst thing you can do. All you do is add a lot of moisture to the oil that won't burn off.

Change the oil and park it, it will be fine.

Delo 400 or Delvac Super, Delo 400 gives best UOA on MB engines, check out BITOG forum UOAs posted. Delo 400 and Delvac Super are also the best value and your pocket is not emptied out. Unless you live in extremely cold region of the country, synthetics don't hold any apparent advantage over these two HDEO.

On those 20 degree mornings you REALLY notice that 15w40 dino oil. Your poor starter is working double over time.

Delo is a good oil, but in the winter it flows real slow, like all dino's.

Agreed but its food for temps down to 40, no less. For lower temps, Delo synth along with Delvac 1 makes a good option.

Pretty much ANY 5W-40 diesel rated synthetic will be just fine and far better than any dino oil. Rotella synthetic is often the best buy of the quality oils. Mobil, Redline and Amsoil synthetics are probably the best but in an IDI engine, soot will be your limit more than the oil.

I tend to use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel for my last change before winter (just in case I have to stretch the change interval) and Rotella the rest of the year.

This spring I spoke with the "battery" guys at Les Schwab. They told me if I store my '80 300SD again for the Winter, I should disconnect my battery...to "save yourself a lot of bother AND money". Just a FYI.

Whenever I have a vehicle that's going to sit for more than a few weeks I disconnect it. SOP to me.

I always do, but my car has an alarm so it would be drained in probably a month if I didn't.
