Why Adjust Waste Gate

1985 300DT

I cleaned and adjusted all that has been suggested on all previous post and my boost was 10lbs, and I wanted to increase it some. I have the KKK turbo on my 85 300TD wagon. It is supose to be the easyest to reset. Take off air cleaner & pan, loosen lock nut with 10mm socket, insert allen wrench through socket hold socket, turn allen wrench clock wise SOME & put all back together. Made a run WITH BOOST GAUGE and it was only 11 lbs. didn't turn allen enough......... Took about 1 hour + scratched arms ect...

Bought manual waste boost controller available on e-bay $15 - $50. Took about 20 minutes to install, tested car was 10lbs. Stopped on side of road dialed in more boost 1 minute, 12 lbs.... another stop 1 minute more and its 14 right where I wanted.

Still a little slow off the line.. adjusted the ALDA 1.5 turns CCW 5 minutes work... and boy off the line I thought it might spin the tires.... well maybe. But what a difference it is like a gas car now. Off the line good and the boost comes in sooner.

POINT OF MY POST: Get a manual boost control *** it's much easer and faster to adjust than the waste gate BUT DON"T forget the BOOST GAUGE A MUST. I hooked mine into a plugged port on pass side, at rear of intake manifold.
Thanks to all that have gone before with their help. Listen to them.
Phil

14psi is too high, the KKK turbo is inefficient at that pressure. Any more than 12psi with stock fuel settings is a waste of energy.

I thought he said he up'd the fuel at the ALDA.
Or do you mean, even with the ALDA maxed?

The ALDA makes zero difference in the boost pressure requirement no mater how its set, it does not change the maximum fuel rate.

The ALDA only makes a difference with no boost, before the turbo kicks in. That's why he gets a better pull off the line.

Yes, but only at lower RPM when the turbo isn't spooled. How much more consumption in MPG, I couldn't tell you, but I can't imagine that it'll be more than a few if you have a lead foot.

Alda is an aneroid, that limits the ammount of fuel that is injected before there is enough boost (or oxygen) to burn in the combustion chamber, wich reduces the ammount of fuel you use and stops the black smoke.

Only if its poorly adjusted and black smoke can be seen out the tailpipe during acceleration. While at a steady speed the ALDA makes no difference in economy.

Ok so i adjust as low as it can go and i am still getting black smoke, could this means that the injectors are worn out and needs replacement???

Injectors, valve adjustment, restricted airflow, leaking EGR valve, excessively worn timing chain, etc. Any of those can cause black smoke.

timing chain is good, valve adjustment done not long ago, air flow is ok, egr removed, so that means the injector is needed service then

If they have more than 100k miles then they need cleaned, tested and adjusted or replaced (if bad).
