Oil foaming, the crank/rods sloshing in liquid oil.

Drain some out until its half way between the two marks with the engine warm.

air in the oil can cause cavitation in the oil pump and send foam through the bearing causing lack of lubrication.

Overfill

Another issue is that higher oil level will cause increased pressure in the crankcase due to a decreased volume of air. This can create havoc on the front and rear main seals and cause them to leak.

Overfilling can also lead to an engine runaway condition.

Halfway between the two marks? Is that where it is at with the full 8 qts or whatever the capacity is? I thought it should be near the top mark.

The marks are the operating range, not empty/full.

Consider the "halfway" mark a safety zone.... when the oil heats up like everything else it expands and it will bring the oil level up.

Between the two marks is the "safe" range. Lower mark being minimum safe oil level and the upper mark being maximum.

The crankcase hold 7.9 quarts on the OM617.9xx. Since we do not buy our oil in liters, 8 quarts, or two gallons puts the oil level a hair above the upper mark.

Makes sense... I guess I am just wondering where it shows up when you have done an oil change, drained all the oil out, and then added a fresh 8qts.

edit: nevermind, I see someone answered my question while I was typing this. Thanks.

it is mostly caused by restricted air passages for blowby to vent. Oil sloshing around, going down a steep hill, pressure builds, pops or deforms a seal.. perhaps valve stem seals as well.
