84 300sd brakes weak for 1st minute don't work

I have a 1984 300sd and the brakes are really bad when I first start the car or when then car idles for a while. Once I start driving everything is fine but when I first start the car it's hard to stop when I start moving. I press the pedal hard but it still moves.

I slam on the brakes but it's like I don't have power brakes. I think this may be some kind of vacuum leak but I don't know what I should check.

The door locks work fine but I've noticed the car is not turning off when I turn off the car and take out the key. I'm not sure if the car turn off problems and the brake problems are related or not.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Pete

Vacuum problem somewhere. You need to get a MityVac and do some testing. Could be a weak pump, bad brake booster, large leak somewhere in the system.

The increased rpm's are creating more vacuum overcoming the problem. It will probably slowly get worse.

the central locking system on the 300SD has it's own pump in the trunk. It supplies vacum for the locking system only. The vacum pump on the engine supplies vacum for the brakes, engine control, and hvac system. From what you describe, I'd look at either the brake booster or the Vacum pump iteself. Did I miss how many miles on the 'ol girl?

you can test the brake booster but I suspect the check valve in the line going to it is leaking down.
